ForahundredyearsbeforetheEriewasbuilt,peoplehadbeentalkingaboutacanalwhich

couldjointheGreatLakesandtheAtlanticOcean.ThemanwhoplannedtheErieCanalandcarried

theplanthroughwasDeWittClinton.Thosewhowereagainstthecanallaughinglycalledit

“Clinton'sDitch(沟)Clintontalkedandwroteaboutthecanalanddrewupplansforit.Heand

GovernorMorriswenttoWashingtonin1812toaskforhelpforthecanal,buttheywere

unsuccessful.

ClintonbecamegovernorofNewYorkin1817,andshortlyafterwards,onJuly4,1817,broke

groundforthecanalinRome,N.Y.Thefirstpartofthecanalwascompletedin1820.Asthecanal

grew,townsalongitscoursedevelopedfast.Thelengthofthecanalis363miles.

Brothers.WhenHarrymarriedin1894,heandhiswifeBessworkedtogetherasmagicianand

assistant.Butforalongtimetheywerenotverysuccessful.ThenHarryperformedhisfirstprison

escape,inChicagoin1898.Harrypersuadedadetectivetolethimtrytoescapefromtheprison,and

heinvitedthelocalnewspapermentowatch.

Itwasthepublicity(宣传)thatcamefromthisthatstartedHarryHoudini'ssuccess.Harryhad

fingerstrainedtoescapefromhandcuffsandtoestrainedtoescapeanklechins.Buthisbiggest

secretwashowheunlockedtheprisondoors.Everytimehewentintotheprisoncell,Bessgavehim
