ashamed.Butalapseofintegrityalsoaffectsourrelationshipswithothers.Trustisessentialinanyimportant

relationship,whetherpersonalorprofessional.Whocantrustsomeonewhoisdishonestorunfair?Thus,integritymust

beoneofourmostimportantgoals.

RiskyBusiness

Weareeachresponsibleforourowndecisions,evenifthedecision-makingprocesshasbeenundenninedby

stressorpeerpressure.Therealtestofcharacteriswhetherwecanlearnfromourmistake,byunderstandingwhywe

actedaswedid,andthenexploringwaystoavoidsimilarproblemsinthefuture.

Makingethicaldecisionsisacriticalpartofavoidingfutureproblems.Wemustlearntorecognizerisks,because

ifwecan*tseetheriskswe'retaking,wecan'tmakeresponsiblechoices.Toidentifyrisks,weneedtoknowtherules

EvaluatingRisks

Todecidewhetherariskisworthtaking,youmustexaminetheconsequences,inthefutureaswellasrightnow,

negativeaswellaspositive,andtoothersaswellastoyourself.Thosewhotakeriskstheylaterregretusuallyfocuson

immediatebenefits("what'sinitforme"),andsimplyhaven'tconsideredwhatmightgowrong.Theconsequencesof

gettingcaughtareserious,andmayincludea"0"onatestorassignment;anintheclass;suspensionordismissal

fromschool;transcriptnotation;andatarnishedreputation.Infact,whenyoubreakaruleorlaw,youlosecontrolover

yourlife,andgiveothersthepowertoimposepunishment:youhavenocontroloverwhatthatpunishmentmightbe.

Thisisanextremelyprecariousandvulnerableposition.Theremaybesomemattersoflifeanddeath,orhighest

principle,whichmightjustifysucharisk,buttherearen*tmanythingsthatfallinthiscategory.

GettingAwayWithIt-OrNot

Thosewhodon'tgetcaughtpayanevenhigherprice.Acheaterdoesn'tlearnfromthetest,deprivinghim/herself

ofaneducation.Cheatingunderminesconfidenceandindependence:thecheaterisafraud,andknowsthatwithout

dishonesty,he/shewouldhavefailed.Cheatingdestroysself-esteemandintegrity,leavingthecheaterashamed,guilty,

andafraidofgettingcaught.Worstofall,acheaterwhodoesn'tgetcaughtthefirsttimeusuallycheatsagain,notonly

becausehe/sheisfartherbehind,butalsobecauseitseems"easier."Thisslipperyslopeoferodingethicsandbigger

risksleadsonlytodisaster.Eventually,thecheatergetscaught,andthelaterhe/shegetscaught,theworsethe

consequences.Studentshavebeendismissedfromschoolbecausetheydidn'tgetthissimplemessage:Honestyisthe

CheatingHurtsOthers,Too

Cheatersoftenfeelinvisible,asiftheiractions"don'tcount**anddon'treallyhurtanyone.Butindividualchoices

everyday.Ifnot,wecouldn'tputmoneyinthebank,buyfood,clothing,ormedicinefromothers,driveacrossabridge,

individualsforgetorignoretheeffecttheirdishonestycanhave.Thesavingsandloanscandal,thestockmarketand

politicalandeconomicleadersandsocietyasawhole.Suchincidentstakeatremendoustollonournation*seconomy
