directorandpartnershadbeenlookingfor.Gubrokenewgroundaswell,

beingthefirstblindtalk-showhostinChina.

ThisachievementdidnotgounnoticedinChina.Ontheeveningof22

December,atChinaCentralTelevision,sstudiosforthelivebroadcast

of'SportsSalon,'GuHaoexpresseddeepgratitudetohismother,Gu

Baozhi,beforemillionsofviewers,sayingthatheowedhisentirelife

toherkindnessandcare.Withouther,hewouldnothavehadtheconfidence

orthecouragetofighthisdisability.Whenaskedwhathewouldliketo

seeifhecouldhavenormaleyesightforoneinstant,hesaidwithout

hesitationhewouldlovetoseehismother.Soontherewerephonecalls

comingintotheTVstationfromallpartsofthecountry,extending

traditionalChinesegreetingsandblessingstoGuBaozhi.Gu'smother,

meanwhile,hasbeenpromotedtodeputydeanattheHenanEngineering

Institute,inchargeofteaching.

GuHaowasbornon14January,1972,duringasnowstorminZhengzhou.His

father,whowasworkinginLuoyangatthetime,hurriedbacktoseehis

newbornson.Whenhewas100daysold,Dr.Han,oneoftheneighbors,

suggestedGuBaozhitakethebabytothehospitalforacheckup.Dr.Han

hadnoticedthebaby'seyeswerenotfocusing.

AttheophthalmologicalinstituteatHenan'sPeople1sHospital,Dr.Ma

Zhenxi,anationallyrenownedoculist,said,afterexaminingthechild,

thathewassufferingfromacongenitaldisorderofhyperplasiabehind

thetunicfibrosaduetoanadhesionofthecorneatothepupil.There

isstillnoknowncureforthisaffliction.

Gu'smother,nowindespair,tookGuHaotoseveralhospitalsinBeijing.

AttheinstituteofophthalmologyatBeijing,swell-knownTongren

Hospital,thechiefsurgeonexaminedGuHaoforawholedayandfinally

simplyshookhishead.GuwasthenexaminedbytheBeijingUnionMedical

CollegeHospital,theNo.301HospitaloftheChinesePeople,sLiberation

Army,theAcademyofTraditionalChineseMedicineandmanyothers,but

alltonoavail.Therewasnocureforhiscondition.

GuBaozhiwondered,whyhadthishappenedtoherchild?Forseveraldays,

shewasinshock,unabletoeatorsleet.Shewastoldbysometosend

herbabyawaytothecountrysideandhaveanother.Evenherhusbandthought

thatmightbeforthebest,butGuBaozhiwouldnothearofit.

Herhusbanddidnotwanttheburdenofablindchildandsixmonthslater

divorcedGuBaozhitomarrysomeoneelse.Itwaslefttothemotheralone

tobringupherhandicappedbaby.Herloveforherinnocentchildwas

strongenoughtogiveherthenecessarycourage.Once,whenshehadahigh

fever,sheheardhimcrying.Guhaohadtriedtopourheracupofwater

buthadspiltitinsteadandscaldedhisfoot.Afewyearsearlier,thought

task.LaterGudrewsuccorfromhismother*sspiritandbegantolearn

rapidly,practisingBraillebyfillinginapieceofmodelboardwith

milletgrain.Onedarknight,sheheardasoundinhisroomandsawhim

hardatwork.Shesatwithhimuntilthenextmorning.Asaresultofsuch

dedication.GuHaowasthefirststudenttomasterreadingandwriting

Braille.

ThenGuhadtoleavehomeforboardingschool.Guhaobumpedintowalls

whentryingtofindaclassroomorhisbedinthedormitory.Whengoing

tothetoilethesteppedintotheurinal.Backhomeattheweekends,he

onlytoldhismotherallthepleasantthingsthathadhappened.

Itissadforawomantobealone.In1987,GuBaozhiremarried,toamember
