Oneofthemostnoticeablefeaturesofurbangrowthinthe20thcenturyhasbeentherapidincreaseinthenumberofverylargecities.Before1800,citieswithmorethanamillioninhabitantswererare.Sincethen,however,thenumberofsuchcitieshasrisensteadily.In1900therewereatleast13citieswithmorethanamillioninhabitants,andby1950thenumberhadgrownto68.By2000therewillbeatleast250citiesofmorethanamillion--manyofwhichwillbeinAsia,especiallyinIndiaandChina.
