苏州园林英文介绍theHumbleAdministrator'sGardenCovering51,950sq.m,theHumbleAdministrator'sGardenisthelargestofallclassicalgardensinSuzhou.Itiscentereduponthebroadexpanseofalake,makingupaboutonefifthofthetotalarea.Withwellspacedbuildings,thegardenlandscapeandwaterscapearesimple,extensiveandnatural,possessingthetraditionalappearancesoftheMingDynasty.Itisdividedintothreeparts;theeastern,middlethewesternparts.Thehouseliesinthesouthofthegarden.

Themiddlepartisthecreamofthegardenwithmarvellousmountains,clearwater,exquisitebuildingsandexuberanttreesandflowerreminiscentofthesceneryinthesouthoftheLowerYangtze.Lyinghereandtheretothesouthofthelakearegardenbuildingsandcourtsincluster.Onaneast-westaxisthere'stheHallofDriftingFragranceinthemiddle,flankedbytheLoquatGardenCourt,theMalusMicromalusMakinacourt,thePoenyPavilion,theListeningtotheSoundofRainPavilion,thesmallcanglang,"APureMindThinksDeep",andtheMagnoliaHall.Risingfromthelakearetheeastandwesthillsmadefromamixtureofearthandrocks,andcoveredwithtrees.thePrunusMumePavilionandtheOrangePavilionstandatopofthehills.Bythesideofthelakethereareforsythiasgentlystrokingthesurfaceofwater,andbringingaboutdelightfuleffectsofnature.MuchofthesurprisecomesfromthedispositionoftheFragrantISle,thepavilioninlotusbreezesandtheMountain-in-ViewTowertothewestofthelake.fromthesecludedpavilionofFirmianaSimplexandBamboooneisabletocatchsightofthepagodaofpayingdebtsofgratitudeindistance.Thepicturesquesceneofthepagodamirroredinwaterisanexampleofthegardentechniquecalled"borrowedviewfromafar".

Thebuildingsinthewesternpartofthegardenareproperlyarrangedbythelake.Tothesouthofthelakeisabigmandarinduck'shallwithtwohalves.Thenorthernhalfisnamed"theHallof

36pairsofmandarinducks"andthesouthernhalf"thehallof18camellias".builttothewestofthelakearetheInducalamusPavilion,the"WithWhomShallISit"?pavilion,theFloatingGreenTower,theStay-and-ListenPavilion,thePagodaReflectionpavilion.Goingupanddownandinazigzag,auniqueverandaoverthewaterisastucturebuiltalongthewalltotheeastofthelake.TheGood-For-Both-FamiliesPaviliononthetopofthehilloverlooksthemiddleandwesternparts,anotherexampleofthegardentechniquecalled"borrowedviewfromnear".

DecoratedwiththeCymbidiumVirensHall,thelotuspavilion,theCelestialSpringPavilion,theFarAwayLookingPavilionandtheAllbluePavilion,theeasternpartofthegardenhasverdanthillswithpine

andbamboo,distantislandsencircledbywindingstreams,andanextensiveareaofgrass,flowersandtrees.

Glowingoutofthemud,lotusbloomsstillkeepthemselvespureandclean.Thefarthertheirsmelldriftsthepureritbecomes.Agoodnumberofbuildingsinthegardenarenamedafterlotusblooms,oftenknownas"atruepersonofthevirtue"amongflowers,suchastheHallofDriftingFragrance,theLotusPavilion,thepavilionintheLotusBreeze,andtheStay-and-ListenPavilion,expressingthethemeofthewholegarden----tobepureaslotusblooms.

Lyingtothesouthofthegardenisthehouse,whichisthetypicalresidenceinSuzhou.Onanorth-southaxistherearefoursuccessivebuildings,namelytheSedan-ChairHall,theReceptionHallandtwotwo-storeyedbuildings.totheeastoftheaxisaretheMandarinDucks'Hallwithflower-basketdecoration,theFlowerHallandtheFour-SidedViewingHall.

TheHumbleadministrator'sGardenboastsaltogether48differentbuildings,101parallelcoupletsanddoorplateaux,40stelae,21preciousoldtrees,namelyWistaria,Sabinachinensis,Pterocaryastenoptera,etc.fallinginto13differentcatalogues,andover700bonsai(pottedlandscape)keptintheBonsaiGardeninthewesternpartofthegarden,representingtheSuzhoustylebonsai,oneofthefourleadingbonsaistylesinchina.

theLingeringGarden

TheLingeringGardenwaslistedfromthefirstasculturalrelicsofnationalimportancein1961.Withanareaof23,310sq.m.itiscelebratedforitsartisticwayofdealingwiththespacesbetweenvariouskindsofarchitecturalform.Buildingsmakeuponethirdofthetotalareaofthegarden,thehallofwhichbeingthemostremarkableinSuzhou.Thegardenisseparatedintothemiddle,eastern,northernandwesternparts.Theancestraltempleandthehouselietothesouthofthegarden.

Featuringman-mademountainandlakesceneryinthewestandgardencourtsintheeast,themiddlepartofthegardenistheoriginalsiteoftheXu'sEastGardenandtheLiu'sHanbiVilla,andisregardedasthebestpartofthewholegarden.Theeastern,northernandwesternpartsaretheextensionsoftheSheng'sGarden.Theeasternpartisnotedforitsstrangelyshapedlimestones,thenorthernpartidyllicscenes,andthewesternpartthedelightsofwoodyhills.

Awindingroofedwalkwaybehindthesmallentranceofthegarden,whileleadingtotheplacesofquietude,showsthemasterlyuseofcontrastbetweenbigandsmall,straightandzigzag,andlightandshade.Afterstrollingforabout50meters,onecancatchaglimpseoflattice-windowsrevealingahalfvisiblelandscapegardenbehind.Interestinglyenough,theviewischangingateverystep.

Themiddlepartofthegardeniscentereduponalakewithman-mademoutaininthenorth-westandanumgerofattractivebuildingsinthesouthwest,suchastheHanbiMoutainVilla,thePellucidTower,theGreenShadePavilion,theZigzagStreamTower,theHaoPuPavilion,andtheRefreshingBreezePavilionbythelake.Themountainsmademainlyofyellowstonesandearth,believedtobedesigtnedandpiledup

byZhouBinzhong,lookverymucharchaicandsplendiferous.TheadmirableCraneHouse,theSmallGardenofStoneForest,theReturn-to-ReadStudyintheeastwiththeCelestialHallofFivePeaksasthechiefstucturearelaidoutinsuchawaythattheindoorspaceshavebeenbroughtintoperfectharmonywiththeoutdoorspaces.Withanevocationofinfinity,theyaresuccessfullymadetobelabyrinthine.

FlankedbytheAuspiciousCloudandMountainousCloudpeaks,the6.5-meter-highCloud-CappedPeak,thehighestlimestoneintheclassicalgardensofSuzhou,isbelievedtobeleftbehindbytheimperialcollectoroftheNorthernSongDynasty,Massofbuildings,includingtheOldHermitScholars'House,theCloud-CappedTower,theCloud-CappedTerraceandtheAwaitingCloudTemple,areputuptogiveemphasistotheCloud-CappedTower,Thenorthernpartisnowabonsaigardeninwhichabout500valuablebonsaiareputondisplay.

Thewesternpartofthegardensetsafineexampleofgood-lookingearthenhillsstuddedwithyellowstonesandcoveredwithmapletrees.Thereisawindingbrooklinedwithpeachtreesandweepingwillows.

ThenumberofstelaeintheLingeringGardenhasneverbeensurpassedbyanyothergardensinSuzhou.SuperblyinscribedwiththeworksofmorethanahundredcalligraphersintheJin,Tang,Song,Yuan,Ming,andQingDynasties,theseinvaluablestelaebringtolighttheevolutionarycourseofChinesecalligraphyinthepast1,000years.

Thewholegardenpossesseswithpride42roomsandhalls,a670-meter-longroofedwalkway,200lattice-windowsofdifferentkinds,44parallelcoupletsandstonecarvings,373stelae,and17suchvaluableoldtreesasgingkoes,southernwistaria,etc.whichfallinto8theLionForestGarden

Compactlyyetharmoniouslyspaced,theLionForestGardenhasaprominentpartforseriesofman-mademountainswithvariousbuildingsaroundthelake,andanartificialwaterfallandcliffsattheedgeofthelakeonthewest.Remainsofthe14thcenturyman-mademountains,covering1,152sq.m.andbeingthelargestofallatSuzhou,canbestillseentoday.Notedforitslabyrinthinemountainswithwindingpathwaysandcaverns,oldpinesandcypresstrees,awesomepeaksandjoggedrocksofgrotesqueshapesresemblingdancinglionswithstrikingandunusralposes,itpossesseswithpridethetruedelightsofmountainandforestsceneryinlimitedspacewithaflavorofZenBuddhism.

TheHallofPeaceandHappiness,oneoftheprincipalbuildingsinthegarden,isamaster-pieceoftypicalmandarinducks'hallatSuzhou.Dividedinhalves,thenorthernhalfofthehalldiffersfromthesouthenhalfin

manyparticularaspects,suchasbeam-framingsystems,furnishings,pavements,carvings,windowdesignsandsoforth.Withpaintedpatternsandbeamcarvingsandlookingsplendidingreenandgold,theTrueDelightPavilionintheroyalstylewiththe"TrueDelight"tabletinscribedbytheQingEmperorQianlongisamainviewingplaceinthegardenanddiffersfromtheotherplainandelegantgardensofSuzhou.OtherbuildingsincludethepointingatCypressTreesHall,theAskingPrunusMumePavilionandtheStoneBoat,etc.

TheLionForestGardenboasts22buildingsofvariedtypes,25tabletsandplateaux,71stelesinscribedwiththefamousCalligraphyCollectionoftheListeningtoRainTower,23brickcarvings,5carvedwoodenscreens,and13valuableoldtreessuchasgingobilobaL.,pinusbungeanaZucc,etc.,whichfallinto5catalogues.

theexistingclassicalgardensofSuzhou.Theexact

Celebratedforthedelightsofthewildernessofmountainandforestscenery,theCanglangPavilionistheoldestamonglocationoftheCanglangPavilioncanbefoundintheSongDynastymapofPingjiang(Suzhou,A.D.1229)inscribedonthestele.ThenorthernSongpoetSuSunqinsaidin"ARecordoftheCanglangPavilion”,”...TotheeastoftheConfucianTemplewereearthenhillscoveredwithtreesandgrass,andawideexpanseofwater,quitedifferentfromtheurbanscenes...IwasreluctanttoleavebecauseIfellinlovewiththisplace.SoIboughtitfor20,000coins,builtapavilionontherockprojectingoverthewateronthenorthandcalledittheCanglangPavilion."FanChendawrotein"HistoricalRecordsofWuJun"undertheSongDynasty,"TheCanglangPavilionislocatedtothesouthoftheConfucianTemple,frontinganareaofabout1.6ac.ofwaterspace...DuringthereignofQingli(1044A.D.)SuSunqingboughtitandbuiltapavilionbythewater,calledtheCanglangPavilion...ThenameoftheCanglanghasbeenknowntoallfarandwidesincethen."OnthewholethepresentgardenoftheCanglangPavilionstillkeepsthestyleoftheSong.Itfeaturesarangeofman-mademoutainsinsidethegardenandwaterscapesoutside.Proceedingpastthepureexpanseofwateroverazigzagbridgeofstoneandthroughtheentrance,onecomestothegardenandcatchessightofman-mademountaincoveredwithage-oldtreesandbamboo,runningfromeasttowest.Atthefootofthemountainsarerockyslops.TheCanglangPavilionintheshapeofasquarestandsatthetopofthemountainandhasaparallelcoupletfromtheSongpoetsonthestonepillarstoheightenartisticconception,reading,"Therefreshingbreezeandthebrightmoonarepriceless,thenearbywaterandthedistantmountainsstrikeasentimentalnote,"Mostofthegardenbuildings,simpleandplain,wererebuiltintheQingDynasty,carefullyarrangedaroundthemountainsandconnectedbyalongroofedwalkway.Adouble-corridorbuiltbythecanalliestothenorthofthegarden,u
