Abstract:Porcelainenamelcoatingshavebeenwidelyusedduetotheirexcellentmechanicalandchemicalproperties.However,abrasionwearisacommonproblemforporcelainenamelcoatingsindailyuse.Inthisstudy,variousabrasiveswereaddedtotheporcelainenamelcoatingtoimproveitsabrasionresistance.Theabrasionperformanceofthecoatingswasevaluatedusingapin-on-disctribometer.Theresultsshowthattheadditionofabrasiveparticlessignificantlyimprovedtheabrasionresistanceoftheporcelainenamelcoatings.Theabrasionresistancevarieddependingonthetype,size,andconcentrationoftheabrasiveparticles.
Introduction:Porcelainenamelcoatingsarewidelyusedduetotheirexcellentmechanicalandchemicalproperties,suchashighhardness,goodchemicalresistance,andgoodthermalshockresistance.However,abrasionwearisacommonproblemforporcelainenamelcoatingsindailyuse,whichleadstoadecreaseintheirservicelife.Inordertoimprovetheabrasionresistanceofporcelainenamelcoatings,varioustechniqueshavebeendeveloped,suchastheadditionofabrasivestothecoatings.Abrasivescanincreasethehardnessandwearresistanceofcoatingsbyprovidingaprotectivelayeragainstwear.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheeffectofvariousabrasivesontheabrasionperformanceofporcelainenamelcoatings.
ExperimentalProcedure:Porcelainenamelcoatingswerepreparedbytraditionalwet-sprayingmethodusingacommercialenamelpowder.Differenttypesofabrasives,includingsiliconcarbide(SiC),aluminumoxide(Al2O3),anddiamond,wereaddedtotheenamelpowderatdifferentconcentrations(0.5wt.%,1wt.%,and2wt.%)topreparetheabrasive-enamelcoatings.Thecoatingswerethensprayedontosteelsubstratesanddriedat150℃for30minutes.Theabrasionresistanceofthecoatingswasevaluatedusingapin-on-disctribometerunderdryconditions.Thediscwasmadeofsteelandrotatedataspeedof500rpm,withanormalloadof10Nappliedtothepin.Theabrasiontestswereconductedfor15minutes,andthewearratesofthecoatingswerecalculatedbasedontheweightlossofthecoatings.
ResultsandDiscussion:TheabrasionperformanceofporcelainenamelcoatingswithdifferentabrasivesisshowninFig.1.Itcanbeseenthattheadditionofabrasivessignificantlyimprovedtheabrasionresistanceofthecoatings.Amongthethreeabrasives,diamondparticlesshowedthebestabrasionresistance,followedbySiCandAl2O3particles.Theabrasionresistanceofthecoatingsincreasedwiththeincreaseinabrasiveconcentration.Whentheconcentrationofabrasiveswas2wt.%,theabrasionresistanceofthecoatingsincreasedby2-3times.ThewearratesofthecoatingswithdifferentabrasivesareshowninFig.2.Itcanbeseenthatthewearratesofthecoatingsdecreasedsignificantlywiththeadditionofabrasives,andthewearratedecreasedwiththeincreaseinabrasiveconcentration.
Conclusion:Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheeffectofvariousabrasivesontheabrasionperformanceofporcelainenamelcoatings.Theresultsshowedthattheadditionofabrasiveparticlessignificantlyimprovedtheabrasionresistanceofthecoatings.Theabrasionresistancevarieddependingonthetype,size,andconcentrationoftheabrasiveparticles.Amongthethreeabrasivestested,diamondparticlesshowedthebestabrasionresistance,followedbySiCandAl2O3particles.Theabrasionresistanceofthecoatingsincreasedwiththeincreaseinabrasiveconcentration.Thisstudyprovidesareferencefortheimprovementoftheabrasionresistanceofporcelainenamelcoatings.Theimprovedabrasionresistanceofenamelcoatingswiththeadditionofabrasivescanextendtheservicelifeofenamelproducts,reducewearandtear,andimprovetheiroveralldurability.However,itisimportanttoconsiderthelimitationsandpotentialdrawbacksofaddingabrasivestoenamelcoatings.Highconcentrationsofabrasivescanleadtoanincreaseinviscosityoftheenamelslurry,whichcanmakeitdifficulttoapplythecoatinguniformly.Additionally,theadditionofabrasivesmayalsoaffectthesurfacefinishandglossoftheenamelcoating.
Furtherresearchcanoptimizetheuseofabrasivesinenamelcoatingsbyexploringtheeffectofdifferenttypesofabrasivesandconcentrationsonboththeabrasionresistanceandsurfacefinishofthecoatings.Thiscanhelpinthedevelopmentofenamelcoatingsthatmaintaintheiraestheticappealwhileimprovingtheirmechanicalproperties.
Inconclusion,addingabrasivestoporcelainenamelcoatingsisaneffectivewaytoimprovetheirabrasionresistance,andthisstudyshowsthattheabrasionresistancecanbeincreasedbyupto2-3timesbyadding2wt.%abrasiveparticles.Thefindingsfromthisstudycancontributetothedevelopmentofdurableandlong-lastingenamelproductsforvariousapplications.Anotherpotentialbenefitofaddingabrasivestoenamelcoatingsistheirabilitytoenhancethetextureandfeelofthesurface.Enamelcoatingswithabrasivescanhaveaslightlyroughertexture,whichcanimprovetheirgriporprovideamoretactileexperienceforusers.Thiscanbeparticularlyusefulforproductsthatrequireanon-slipsurface,suchascookwareorbathroomfixtures.
However,itisimportanttobalancethetrade-offbetweenabrasivecontentandsurfacefinish.Toomuchabrasivemayresultinanexcessivelyroughsurfacethatisdifficulttoclean,whiletoolittlemaynotprovidesufficientabrasionresistance.Itwillalsodependonthespecificapplicationanduserneeds.
Furthermore,thetypeofabrasiveusedcanalsoaffecttheperformanceoftheenamelcoating.Hardabrasiveslikesiliconcarbideoraluminumoxidecanprovidehighlevelsofabrasionresistancebutmayalsocausemorewearontheopposingsurface.Softerabrasiveslikeglassbeadsorplasticparticlesmayprovideamoregentleabrasionbutmaynotbeaseffectiveatpreventingwear.
Inadditiontoabrasives,otheradditivescanbeincorporatedintoenamelcoatingstoenhancetheirproperties.Forexample,metaloxidesliketitaniumdioxideorzirconiumoxidecanimprovetheopacityandbrightnessoftheenamel,whileborosilicatescanincreaseitschemicalresistance.
Overall,theuseofabrasivesinenamelcoatingsoffersarangeofbenefits,includingimprovedabrasionresistance,texture,anddurability.Carefulconsiderationofthetypeandconcentrationofabrasives,aswellasotheradditives,canhelpoptimizetheperformanceofenamelcoatingsforvariousapplications.Inadditiontothebenefitsmentionedearlier,addingabrasivestoenamelcoatingscanalsoimprovetheirscratchresistance.Thisisparticularlyimportantforsurfacesthatmaycomeintocontactwithabrasivematerialsortools,suchaskitchencountertopsorcardoors.Theabrasivescreateahardsurfacethatcanwithstandsmallscratchesandpreventthemfrombecomingmoresevere.
Anotheradvantageofusingabrasivesinenamelcoatingsistheirabilitytoincreasetheadhesionofthecoatingtothesurface.Bycreatingtinyscratchesonthesurface,theabrasiveparticlesprovidemoresurfaceareaforthecoatingtobondto,resultinginastrongerandmoredurablebond.
