BEVsalesbuckoverallmarkettrend

BEVsaleshavestoodoutasashiningbeaconinaratherdepressedcar

marketthisyear.GlobalBEVsalesinthefirsthalfof2022roseby81%

comparedtotheequivalentperiodlastyear.Thisisimpressiveinitsown

right,butevenmoresowhenoneconsidersthatoverallglobalsalesofall

powertrainsactuallyfellby12%inthesameperiod.

SalesofbatteryelectricvehiclesinChinamorethandoubledinthefirsthalfof2022incomparisonwiththesameperiodin2021

MuchoftheincreasecanbeattributedtoChina,whereBEVsalesmorethan

doubledinH12022relativetoH12021tomorethantwomillion.PHEVsales

growthwasevenmorerapidinChina,upby170%inH12022vs.H12021,

althoughtheabsolutenumberofPHEVsalesweresignificantlylowerthan

forBEVs.TheparticularlyhighPHEVgrowthratecanbepartiallyexplained

bythecontinuinghighcostofthelargerBEVbatteriesandproduct

availability.

ThePHEVmarketinEuropehasbeenheadingintheoppositedirection,as

OEMsprioritizeBEVsalesinordertomeetemissionstargetsand

burgeoningcustomerdemand.Inthefirsthalfof2022,overallPHEVsales

decreasedby14%inthetenEuropeanmarketsanalyzedrelativetothe

sameperiodlastyear.GiventheEU’srecentcommitmenttomeasurePHEV

CO2emissionsbasedonwhatthevehiclesactuallyemit,potentiallyreplacing

previousfiguresoftenaccusedofbeingunrealisticallylow,theprioritiesof

EuropeanOEMsareonlylikelytobereinforced.

Changesinmarketshareoverthelastcoupleofyearsrevealthesustained

riseofBEVs.Comparingtheyear2020withH12022,BEVmarketsharein

Chinahasincreasedfrom4%to17%,andinthetenanalyzedEuropean

marketsfrom7%to13%.

AsEVstart-upsarenowfindingitincreasinglychallengingtoraisethe

marketfundingtheyneedtocontinueandexpandtheiroperations,

establishedOEMsareinanidealpositiontobenefitfromthismarketgrowth.

BEVentryintomainstreamconfirmedbyrecentdevelopments

OEMslaunchlong-rangesedans

AutomanufacturerscontinuetolaunchnewanddiverseBEVproductsastheyviewanincreasinglyelectrifiedfuturewithinahighlycompetitiveenvironment.

WhileSUVshavebeentherecentfocusofthisproductoffensive,threerecentlyrevealed,high-profileconceptssuggestthatsedanswillcontinuetoplayanimportantrole.ThissegmentalsohasamoreimportantroleinAsiaandNorthAmerica.

VWrecentlydebutedtheID.Aero,whichitplanstoputintoproductioninmid-2023.TheID.Aero’saerodynamicshape,five-meterlengthandarangeinexcessof600kilometersaredesignedtoappealtothegrowingpremiumBEVmarketinChina,whereitwillgoonsalefirstbeforebecomingavailableinEuropeandNorthAmerica.1TheHyundaiIoniq6,dueinshowroomsin2023,isanotheraerodynamicBEVwitha

potentialrangeofmorethan600kilometers.Itssleekdesigngivesitadragcoefficient,themeasureofhowwellacarcutsthroughtheair,ofjust0.21,whichwillplaceitamongthemostaerodynamically-efficientvehiclesonthemarket.2

Alsoonthehorizon,thistimein2025,istheMercedesVisionAMG.Thefirstpreviewofthecarrevealedasleek,aerodynamic,sportyshape,butwithfourdoors,settocompeteagainstthePorscheTaycan.3

Morefleetsgoelectric

VariouscompaniesandorganizationshaveannouncedmajordealsforsignificantexpansionoftheirBEVfleets.BEVsarebecomingmoreattractiveduetothefavorableTCO,totalcostofownership,andgreaterproductavailability.Hertzhasdeclaredplanstopurchaseupto65,000BEVsoverthenextfiveyears,throughapartnershipwithPolestar,followingonfromitscommitmenttoorder100,000Teslasbytheendof2022.4

FurthersignsthatBEVsaregoingmainstreamincludeabillpassedbytheConnecticutlegislaturerequiring100%ofthestate’sfleettobeelectricby2030,8andRealMadrid’sannouncementthatallmembersofitssoccerandbasketballteamswillbegivenfullyelectricBMWvehicles.9

Chargingiscombinedwithcustomer

experience

Inthelong-term,acomprehensivecharginginfrastructurewillneedtocaterforvehiclesthatarepredominantly,ifnotexclusively,electric.However,intriguinginnovationsareemergingthataimtosatisfychargingdemandinthenearerterm,whilestrengtheningthecompanybrand.FollowingthesuccessofitspilotprojectinNuremberg,Audihasannouncedthatitwillexpanditsfast-charginghubconceptto13moresitesacrossEuropeoverthenextthreeyears.TheNurembergsitedoesnotonlyhostsixrapidchargepoints,butalsoa200m2loungewithameetingroomandterrace.SincethesiteopenedinDecember2021,morethan3,600chargeshavebeenmade.ThesiteisopentoallBEVs,althoughAudidrivershaveaccountedforaroundhalfthevisits.1

Meanwhile,planshavebeensubmittedinLosAngelesbyTeslatobuildadineranddrive-inmovietheaterincombinationwithaBEVchargingstation.Theproposed24-hoursitewillincorporate34chargingstations,withtwoscreensandindoorandoutdoorseatingallowingcustomerstorelaxwhiletheirvehiclesarebeingrecharged.2

Mercedesintendstouseahigh-efficiencybatteryinitsG-classSUVswhicharedueby2025.ThebatterywillbesuppliedbySila,abatterymaterialscompanyinwhichMercedesinvestedin2019.Thenewsilicon-basedanodeoffersuptoa40%improvementinenergydensityandimprovesdrivingrangepercharge.3

Circularsolutionssought

Companiesarerespondingtogrowingregulatorydemandforbatteryrecycling.BMWwillworkjointlywithHuayouRecyclingtorecycleitsusedelectricvehiclebatteriesandreturntherawmaterialsforreusetobuildnewcells.7VWandseveralpartnershavelaunchedaprojectnamedHVBatCycle,whichwillseektodeveloptechnologytokeepcathodemetals,electrolyteandgraphiteinapermanentlyclosedloop.8AndToyotahasfollowedFord,VolvoandTeslainstrikingadealwithRedwoodMaterials,whichaimstobreakdownend-of-lifebatteriesandusetheirmaterialsinnewones.9

Authoritiesconfirmambitioustargets

TheEU’s27memberstatesapprovedtheendofthesaleofcombustionenginevehiclesby2035inEurope.Anintermediateobjectiveofa55%reductioninCO2emissionsforcars,and50%forvans,wasagreedfor2030.10

RegulatorsinCaliforniahaveproposedthat35%ofcarssoldin2026mustbezeroemission.Thispercentagewouldincreaseyearlyuntilallvehicleswillneedtobezeroemissionby2035.11

Inthelastcoupleofyears,anumberofBEVstart-upshaveenteredthemarketthroughthemechanismofaSPAC,specialpurposeacquisitioncompany,apubliclytradedshellcompanysetupspecificallytomergewithaprivatecompanyandtakeitpublic.However,thishighlyproductiveavenueforstart-upsisnowfacingmajorhurdles,bluntingtheinsurgentthreattoincumbentOEMs.

TheSPACroutewasattractivetoBEVstart-upsbecauseitofferedanefficientshort-cuttoanIPO,initialpublicoffering.Mostdealswerewarmlywelcomedbymarkets,andsharepricessoared.Recently,greaterregulatoryscrutiny,underperformance,andachallengingmarketenvironmentingeneralhaveledtoashiftininvestorsentiment.

Nervousmarketshaverespondedaccordingly,with
