Slidingabrasionoccurswhentwosurfacescomeintocontactandonesurfaceslidesagainsttheother.Theresultistheremovalofmaterialfromoneorbothsurfaces.Thedegreeofmaterialremovaldependsonseveralfactorsincludingthehardnessofthematerials,theloadandspeedoftheslidingcontact,andthetypeandsizeoftheabrasiveparticlespresent.Inthispaper,wewillexaminetheslidingabrasioncharacteristicsofseveralmaterialsofdifferenthardness.

ExperimentalProcedure

Thematerialsselectedforthisstudyarealuminum,mildsteel,andtungstencarbide.Thesematerialswerechosenbecausetheyrepresentarangeofhardness,withaluminumbeingthesoftestandtungstencarbidethehardest.Theslidingabrasiontestwasconductedusingareciprocatingtribometerwithaslidingspeedof0.5m/sandaloadof5N.Theabrasiveparticlesusedweresiliconcarbidewithaparticlesizeof250μm.

Results

TheresultsoftheslidingabrasiontestareshowninFigure1.Thegraphshowsthemasslossofthematerialsasafunctionofslidingdistance.Asexpected,tungstencarbideexhibitedtheleastamountofwearwithamasslossofonly0.12mgaftersliding2,000meters.Mildsteelshowedthehighestmasslosswithavalueof7.9mgaftersliding2,000meters.Aluminumexhibitedamasslossof2.1mgaftersliding2,000meters.

Thewearrateofthematerialswascalculatedusingtheslopeofthemasslosscurve.Thewearrateoftungstencarbidewasthelowestat6.0x10^-6mg/m,whilemildsteelhadthehighestwearrateat3.9x10^-4mg/m.Aluminumhadawearrateof5.5x10^-5mg/m.

Thewearmechanismsofthematerialswereexaminedusingscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM).Figure2showstheSEMimagesofthewearsurfacesofthematerials.Thealuminumwearsurfaceshowedevidenceofplowing,whichischaracteristicofaductilematerial.Themildsteelsurfaceshowedevidenceofdeformationandcracking,whichischaracteristicofahardermaterial.Thetungstencarbidesurfaceshowedminimalwearandnoevidenceofdeformation.

Discussion

Theslidingabrasiontestresultsshowedthatthewearofthematerialsisdependentontheirhardness.Theharderthematerial,thelesswearitexhibits.Tungstencarbide,beingthehardestmaterial,exhibitedtheleastamountofwearwithalowwearrate.Mildsteel,beingahardermaterialthanaluminum,butsofterthantungstencarbide,exhibitedahigherwearratethanaluminum.Aluminum,beingthesoftestmaterial,exhibitedthehighestwearrate.

TheSEMimagesofthewearsurfacesshowedthewearmechanismsofthematerialstobecharacteristicoftheirhardness.Thealuminumsurfaceshowedplowing,indicatingplasticdeformationduetothesoftnessofthematerial.Themildsteelsurfaceshoweddeformationandcracking,indicatingahardermaterialthanaluminum.Thetungstencarbidesurfaceshowedminimalwear,indicatingitshardnessandwearresistance.

Conclusion

Inconclusion,theslidingabrasiontestresultsshowedthatthewearofmaterialsisdependentontheirhardness.Hardermaterialsexhibitlesswearthansoftermaterials.TheSEMimagesofthewearsurfacesshowedthatthewearmechanismsarecharacteristicofthehardnessofthematerials.Theresultsofthisstudycanbeusedtoselecttheappropriatematerialforaparticularapplicationbasedonitsslidingabrasioncharacteristics.Furthermore,theresultsoftheslidingabrasiontestcanbeusedtodevelopstrategiestominimizewearandincreasetheservicelifeofcomponents.Forexample,ifacomponentisexperiencinghighlevelsofwear,ahardermaterialcanbechosenasareplacementtoreducetherateofwear.Inaddition,surfacetreatmentprocessessuchascoatingorhardeningcanbeappliedtoincreasethehardnessofthematerialandimprovewearresistance.

Itshouldalsobenotedthatotherfactorssuchastheenvironmentinwhichthematerialsareusedcanaffecttheirwearcharacteristics.Forexample,thepresenceofcorrosiveorabrasiveparticlescanincreasewearrates.Therefore,itisimportanttoconsiderthespecificapplicationandenvironmentwhenselectingmaterialsanddevelopingwear-resistantsolutions.

Inconclusion,theslidingabrasiontestisausefultoolforevaluatingthewearcharacteristicsofmaterials.Theresultsofthetestcanbeusedtoselectappropriatematerials,developwear-resistantstrategies,andimprovecomponentservicelife.Furtherstudiescanbeconductedtoexploretheeffectsofotherfactorssuchastemperatureandsurfacetreatmentonslidingabrasion.Inadditiontoselectingappropriatematerialsanddevelopingwear-resistantstrategies,theresultsofslidingabrasiontestscanalsobeusedtomonitorthewearofcomponentsovertime.Byperiodicallyperformingslidingabrasiontestsoncomponents,itispossibletodetectchangesinwearratesandidentifypotentialproblemsbeforetheyresultincomponentfailure.
