Whysustainablecotton?

Cottonrepresentsabout25%1ofallfibreusedinthetextilesector

globallyandsupportsthelivelihoodsofaround350millionpeople.

Cottonproductioncanpresentsignificantenvironmental,socialand

economicchallengesincluding:

-waterquantityandqualityissues,inappropriateandexcessiveuseofpesticidesandfertilisers,soildepletion

-lowincomesforsmallholderfarmers,forcedandchildlabour,andpricevolatility.

Additionalclimatechangepressuresincludechangingrainfall

patterns,availabilityofwater,risingtemperaturesandcompetitionfor

landforfood,fuelandcarboncapture.

Increasingtheamountofsustainablygrowncottoniskeytoreducingcotton’simpactand

adaptingtothenegativeimpactsoftheclimatecrisis;butwhileprogressisbeingmade,uptake

andproductionislimited,preventingsustainablecottonfrommainstreaming.

Yetsustainableproductionalonewillnotmakethesectorresilienttoclimatedisruption.Thereisnocross-sectoral,

cotton-specific,orwidelyavailableclimateimpactdata,farmershavelittleadaptationguidance,andbusinessesareunpreparedforchangesinsupply.Itisalsoclearthatthecurrentbusinessmodeldoesn’tworkwellforsmallholderfarmersinthemain,andclimatechangewillputfurtherpressureonthecurrentmodel,resultinginevenmorepressureonthemostvulnerablepeopleinthesupplychain.

Whyisthisapriority?

Weknowthatglobalwarmingcouldreach1.5ºCasearlyas2030,withprofounddisruptiveeffectsonagriculturalsystems.Lowincomesandlivelihoodinsecurityperpetuateacycleofpovertywithinfarmingcommunities.Forbusinesses,futurecottonsupplyisatriskifgrowershavetoswitchtoothermoreresilientandprofitablecrops,oraredrivenoutoffarming.

Theclimatecrisis,andourresponsetoit,willfundamentallytransformsocietyandglobalindustries-eithertostaybelow1.5ºC-2ºC,orinresponsetodisruptionfromclimatechangeextremes.Theeffectsoftheclimateemergencyarenotonlyafuturerisk-theimpactsarealreadybeingfelt.

Andatthesametimethereiscurrentlylittledialogueacrossthecottonindustryaboutwhatthismightactuallymeanforkeycottongrowingregionsandthewiderindustry,andhowtheycandevelopcoordinatedresponses.

Whyisthisapriority?

Formoresustainablecottontobecomemainstream,bothproductionanduptakeneedtoincreasesignificantly.Whiletheshareofmoresustainablecottonbeingproducedincreasedfrom12%in2015/16to25%in2018/191,uptakebybrandsandretailersremainslow.Theyareonlyactivelysourcingaround25%ofavailablesupply–or5%ofallglobalcottonproduction–asmoresustainablecotton,leaving75%tobetradedasconventionalcotton12.

Althoughanumberofleadingbrandsaremakingcommitmentstoincreasesourcingofmoresustainablecotton,manybrandsandretailershaveyettocreateasourcingpolicyorsetspecificsourcingtargets.(Seealso:

Inthecurrentretailclimate,brandsmaybelesswillingtoinvestinsustainablefibres,whichmayincreasecostsandreduceprofitmargins,unlesstheyperceiveacompellingbusinesscaseandaneasyandpracticalpathwaytotransition.

Whyisthisapriority?

Thewayinwhichcotton–likemanyotheragriculturalcommodities–iscurrentlytradedworksverywellforasmallnumberofpowerfulplayersbutthehealthoftheenvironmentanddecentlivelihoodsoffarmersandworkersarestilloftennotfactoredin.Thefailingsofcurrentbusinessmodelsarelikelytoworsendramaticallythroughtheimpendingclimatecrisisandassociateddisruptions.Thesefactors,combinedwithpoorlivelihoodsandyoungpeopleturningawayfromfarming,arethreateningfuturesupply.

Over60%oftheworld’scottonisproducedbyaround100millionsmallholdercottonfarmers,withover90%ofthemlivingindevelopingcountrieswheretheygrowthecroponlessthantwohectares.Manyofthesefarmerslivebelowthepovertyline,earninglessforthesaleoftheircottonthantheyneedtocoverthehighinputcostsandtomeetbasicneedssuchasfood,healthcareandtools.

Securingfuturesupplyofcottonwillrequireamovetowardsdifferentbusinessmodelswhichensurefairerdistributionofvalueandriskbetweenstakeholdersandenabletheregenerationoflandandresources.

Whileworkisbeingdonebyindividualcottonstandardsandcommoditiesontheirspecificbusinessmodels,thisislargelynotsharedoraligned.Workingonacross-standard,cross-commoditybasistodevelopmorefuture-focusedapproacheshasthepotentialtosupportlongertermresiliencefortheindustryasawhole.
