TheNetherlandsTwinRegisterisavoluntarydatabasethatisprizedbygeneticistsbecausetheyallowthecomparisonofidenticaltwins(whosharealltheirgenes)withfraternaltwins(whosharehalf).Inthiscase,however,Dr.Vinkdidnotmakeuseofthatfact.Forher,thedatabasewasmerelyaconvenientrepositoryofinformation.Insteadofcomparingidenticalandfraternaltwins,sheconcentratedontheadultfraternaltwins,mostofwhomhadcompletedquestionnairesabouttheirhabits,includingsmoking,and536ofwhomhadgivenDNAsamplestotheregister.
