achievementofmaterialsuccessisthemostwidelyrespectedformofself-improvementintheUnitedStates.SomeoftheearlyEuropeanProtestantleadersbelievedthatpeoplewhowereblessedbyGodmightberecognizedintheworldbytheirmaterialsuccess.AmericanProtestantismhasneverencouragedtheideaofgainingwealthwithouthardworkandself-discipline.Protestantsalsobelievedthatthecapacityforself-disciplinewasaholycharacteristicblessedbyGod.VolunteerismandHumanitarianismTheProtestantideaofself-improvementincludesmorethanachievingmaterialgainthroughhardworkandself-discipline.Itincludestheideaofimprovingoneselfbyhelpingothers.Individuals,inotherwords,makethemselvesintobetterpersonsbycontributingsomeoftheirtimeormoneytocharitable,educational,orreligiouscausesthataredesignedtohelpothers.Thephilosophyissometimescalledvolunteerism,o
