rice-
growing
world,the
Chinese
scientist,
Yuan
Longping,
is
aleading
figure.
YuanLongping
was
born
and
brought
up
inChina.
As
a
boy
he
was
educated
in
manyschools
and
was
given
the
nickname,
"thestudent
who
asks
questions".
From
an
early
age
he
was
interested
in
plants.He
studied
agriculture
in
college
and
as
ayoung
teacher
he
began
experiments
in
cropbreeding.
He
thought
that
the
key
to
feedingpeople
was
to
have
more
rice
and
to
produceit
more
quickly.
He
thought
there
was
onlyone
way
to
do
this
by
crossing
differentspecies
of
rice
plant,
and
then
he
could
producea
new
plant
which
could
give
a
higher
yieldthan
either
of
the
original
plants.
First
Yuan
Longping
experimented
withdifferent
typesof
rice.
The
results
of
hisexperiments
were
published
in
China
in
1966.Then
he
began
his
search
for
a
special
typeof
rice
plant.
It
had
to
be
male.
It
had
to
besterile.
Finally
in
1970
a
naturally
sterile
malerice
plant
was
discovered.
This
was
thebreakthrough.
Researchers
were
brought
infrom
all
over
China
to
develop
the
new
system.The
researchwassupported
by
thegovernment.
As
a
result
of
Yuan
Longping's
discoveriesChinese
rice
production
rose
by
47.5
percentin
the
1990's.
There
were
other
advantagestoo.50
thousand
square
kilometres
of
ricefields
were
converted
to
growing
vegetablesand
other
cash
crops.
Following
this,
YuanLongping's
ricewas
exportedto
othercountries,
such
as
Pakistan
and
the
Philippines.InPakistan
ice
is
the
second
most
importantcropafter
wheat
and
will
be
grown
in
manypars
of
the
country.
