InearlyAnglo-Saxontimesthesword(suchastheexamplesonthebelow)wasbyandlargealmostparallelsideddowntothetip,whereitthentaperedtoapoint;althoughtaperingbladessimilartolateSaxonandVikingswordswerenotunknownatthatpoint.Theseearlyswordsusuallyhadpommelsandcrossguardsmadeupoflayersoforganicmaterialsuchaswood,boneorhorn;whichwereoftensandwiched,embellishedwith,orevencompletelycoveredby,bronze,goldandsilver.Someexampleswereeveninlaidwithgarnetstrappedinseparatecells,orweredecoratedwithenamel.Someswordsalsohadaringattachedtotheupperguard,thattobeginwithwasatruering,butlaterbecamebastardisedintoavestigialringsuchasthatontheSuttonHoosword.Theirpurposeisunclear,althoughtheymayhaverepresentedsomespecialhonourbestowedonthesword'sowner.
