2、edfromUT我从德克萨斯大学毕业已经有37年了Irememberalotofthingsaboutthatday对于毕业那天我记忆犹新IrememberIhadthrobbingheadachefromapartythenightbefore我记得由于前一晚的派对我有些搏动性头痛IrememberIhadaseriousgirlfriend,whomIlatermarried-我记得我有一位严肃交往的女友也就是我后来的妻子thatsimportanttorememberbytheway-记住这个显然很重要andIrememberthatIwasgettingcommissionedinth

3、eNavythatda峨还记得刃B天我将赴海军服役ButofallthethingsIremember在所有这些记忆中Idonthaveacluewhothecommencementspeakerwasthatevenin豉去口不t己得当晚毕业典礼的演讲者是谁了andIcertainlydontrememberanythingtheysaid演讲者说了什么我就更不记得了Soacknowledgingthatfact-这让我认识到ifIcantmakethiscommencementspeechmemorable-就算我不能把毕业典礼演讲讲得让人难忘Iwillatleasttrytomakeit

4、short至少我也该讲得简洁一些TheUniversityssloganis这所大学的口号是Whatstartsherechangestheworld从这里开始改变世界Ivegottoadmit-Ikindalikeit我不得不承认我很喜欢这一口号Whatstartsherechangestheworld从这里开始改变世界Tonighttherearemorethan8,000studentsgraduatingfromUT今天有八千多学生将从德大毕业Thatgreatparagonofanalyticalrigo我进行过严谨的分析研究Ask.ComAsk.Com说saysthattheave

5、rageAmericanwillmeet10,000peopleintheirlifetime一个美国人一生中平均会碰到一万个人10,000people.Thatsalotoffolks一万人相当之多But,ifeveryoneofyouchangedthelivesofjusttenpeople-但是如果你们每个人能够改变十个人的命运andeachoneofthosepeoplechangedthelivesofanothertenpeopl然后这十个人中的每一个再改变另外十个人的命运andanotherten依此类推theninfivegenerations,125years那么五代人后1

6、25年以后theclassof2014作为2014届毕业生willhavechangedthelivesof800millionpeople你们将总共能改变八亿人的命运800millionpeople八亿人thinkaboutit-overtwicethepopulationoftheUnitedStates想想这超过了美国人口的两倍Goonemoregenerationandyoucanchangetheentirepopulationoftheworld-再往前一代你们将能够改变全世界所有人的命运8billionpeople八十亿人Ifyouthinkitshardtochangethel

7、ivesoftenpeople-不要认为自己没能力改变十个人的命运changetheirlivesforever-yourewrong这种想法绝对是错误的IsawithappeneverydayinIraqandAfghanistan我在伊拉克和阿富汗每天都在碰到这样的例子AyoungArmyofficermakesadecisiontogoleft一位年轻的军官决定往左走insteadofrightdownaroadinBaghdad而不是朝巴格达的道路直走andthetensoldierswithhisaresavedfromclose-inambush十位战士就因此免受了敌人的伏击InK

13、为期六个月oflongtorturousrunsinthesoftsand我们要在令人痛苦的软沙地上长跑midnightswimsinthecoldwateroffSanDiego午夜在圣地亚哥岸边冰冷的海水里游泳obstaclescourses,unendingcalisthenic此外还有无休止的障碍跨越训练和健身操dayswithoutsleepandalwaysbeingcold,wetandmiserable有时几天都不睡觉条件则总是寒冷潮湿苦不堪言Itissixmonthsofbeingconstantlyharassedbyprofessionallytrainedwarrior

14、s六个月的时间里总有训练有素的老兵过来找茬whoseektofindtheweakofmindandbody他们会挑剔地找出你身心的弱点andeliminatethemfromeverbecomingaNavySEAL企图将你从海豹突击队的候选名单中剔除出去But,thetrainingalsoseekstofindthosestudents不过训练更重要的目的是要找出whocanleadinanenvironmentofconstantstress,chaos,failureandhardships那些能够克服持续压力混乱失败和艰苦的学员TomebasicSEALtrainingwasali

15、fetimeofchallengescrammedintosixmonthSE我看来基础海豹训练是将一生的挑战都塞到了六个月内So,herearethetenlessonsIlearnedfrombasicSEALtraining下是我从基础海豹训练中获得的十点经验thathopefullywillbeofvaluetoyouasyoumoveforwardinlife但愿它们能对你今后的生活产生帮助EverymorninginSEALtraining海豹训练中每个早晨myinstructors,whoatthetimewereallVietNamveterans我的教官当时都是一些越战老兵w

16、ouldshowupinmybarracksroom他们会来到我的营房andthefirstthingtheywoulddowasinspectmybed第一件事就是检查我的床铺Ifyoudiditright,thecornerswouldbesquare,thecoverspulledtight被子要求叠得有棱有角四四方方thepillowcenteredjustundertheheadboard枕头要放在床头板下正中的位置andtheextrablanketfoldedneatlyatthefootoftherack多出来的床单要整齐地折叠到床脚下Itwasasimpletask,mund

17、aneatbest这是一个简单的任务至少看起来平淡无奇Buteverymorningwewererequiredtomakeourbedtoperfection每天早上我们都被要求将床铺得尽善尽美Itseemedalittleridiculousatthetime看起来可能有些荒唐particularlyinlightofthefactthatwereaspiringtoberealwarriors特别是对于我们这样立志成为真正战士的人toughbattlehardenedSEALs-吃苦耐劳坚毅顽强的海豹成员butthewisdomofthissimpleacthasbeenprovento

18、memanytimesover但实际上这一简单任务的智慧已经被证明过无数次Ifyoumakeyourbedeverymorningyouwillhaveaccomplishedthefirsttaskoftheday早上起来铺好床你就完成了这一天的第一个任务Itwillgiveyouasmallsenseofpride它会让你有/J、小的成就感anditwillencourageyoutodoanothertask并让你做下个任务时更有信心andanotherandanother一个接一个形成良性循环Bytheendoftheday,thatonetaskcompleted完成这一个不起眼的任

19、务willhaveturnedintomanytaskscompleted在一天结束之前会促成很多任务的完成Makingyourbedwillalsoreinforcethefactthatlittlethingsinlifematter铺床还能让你体会到小事的重要性Ifyoucantdothelittlethingsright,youwillneverdothebigthingsright小事如果都做不好大事又怎么可能做得好呢And,ifbychanceyouhaveamiserableday而且就算一天下来你过得很失败youwillcomehometoabedthatismade-至少回去

20、睡觉时还有一张铺好的床等着你thatyoumade-这是你铺的andamadebedgivesyouencouragementthattomorrowwillbebetter这张铺好的床能够鼓舞你让你期待明天会更好Ifyouwanttochangetheworld,startoffbymakingyourbed想要改变世界请从铺好床开始DuringSEALtrainingthestudentsarebrokendownintoboatcrews在海豹训练中学员被分成了几组船员Eachcrewissevenstudents-每一组有七名学员threeoneachsideofasmallrubbe

21、rboatandonecoxswaintohelpguidethedingy小皮艇两侧各三人还有一个舵手在中间指引方向Everydayyourboatcrewformsuponthebeach每天我们都会在海滩上分好组andisinstructedtogetthroughthesurfzoneandpaddleseveralmilesdownthecoast被要求划过海浪带并在岸边划行数英里Inthewinter,thesurfoffSanDiegocangettobe8to10feethigh季圣地亚哥的海浪可以高达8到10英尺anditisexceedinglydifficulttopad

24、dle如果你想改变世界务必找人帮你划桨Overafewweeksofdifficulttraining经过短短几周的艰苦训练mySEALclasswhichstartedwith150menwasdowntojust4学2员人数从最开始的150人缩减为42人Therewerenowsixboatcrewsofsevenmeneach剩下的人组成六个组Iwasintheboatwiththetallguys我同一些高个子在一组butthebestboatcrewwehadwasmadeupofthethelittleguys-但最好的组则由一些小个子组成themunchkincrewwecall

25、edthem-我们称他们为矮子组noonewasoverabout5-footfive他们没人超过5英尺5英寸ThemunchkinboatcrewhadoneAmericanIndian,oneAfricanAmerican!子组中有一个美国印第安人一个非裔美国人onePolishAmerica,oneGreekAmerican,oneItalianAmerican个波兰裔一个希腊裔一个意大利裔andtwotoughkidsfromthemid-west还有两个来自中西部的硬朗伙计Theyoutpaddled,out-ran,andoutswamalltheotherboatcrews其他人

27、ingfasterthaneveryoneandreachingtheshorelongbeforetherestofust匕其他人都游得快早早就到达了目的地SEALtrainingwasagreatequalizer海豹训练中大家都在同一起跑线上Nothingmatteredbutyourwilltosucceed没有什么比求胜欲望更为重要Notyourcolor,notyourethnicbackground,notyoureducationandnotyoursocialstatus肤色种族教育社会地位都不重要Ifyouwanttochangetheworld如果你想改变世界measur

33、ward怕变成糖曲奇勇往直前就行了Everydayduringtrainingyouwerechallengedwithmultiplephysicalevents-每天的训练都包括多重身体挑战longruns,longswims,obstaclecourses,hoursofcalisthenics长跑长品巨离游泳障碍跨越数小时的健身操somethingdesignedtotestyourmettle这些都是为了测试你的耐力Everyeventhadstandards-timesyouhadtomeet每种挑战都有标准包括时间标准Ifyoufailedtomeetthosestandards

40、lideforlife,headfirst一个学员决定冒险使用另一种方式爬绳索Insteadofswinginghisbodyunderneaththeropeandinchinghiswaydown他不再在绳索下方晃动然后往前慢慢移动hebravelymountedthetopoftheropeandthrusthimselfforward他勇敢地爬到绳索的上方往前冲了出去Itwasadangerousmove,seeminglyfoolish,andfraughtwithrisk这彳艮危险看起来甚至有些愚蠢Failurecouldmeaninjuryandbeingdroppedfromt

43、完成Oneisthenightswim其中一种便是夜泳Beforetheswim游泳之前theinstructorsjoyfullybriefthestudentsonallthespeciesofsharks教官会眉飞色舞地给学员介绍thatinhabitthewatersoffSanClemente圣克利J门蒂岛附近生活的各类鲨鱼Theyassureyou,however不过教官会安慰你说thatnostudenthaseverbeeneatenbyashark-atleastnotthattheycanremember至少在他们的记忆中没有学员被鲨鱼吃掉过But,youarealsota

44、ughtthatifasharkbeginstocircleyourposition教官还会告诉你如果有鲨鱼在你旁边绕圈standyourground.Donotswimaway你需要保持位置不要尝试游走Donotactafraid不要展示出胆怯Andiftheshark,hungryforamidnightsnack,dartstowardsyou假如在午夜一只饥饿的鲨鱼向你扑过来thensummonsupallyourstrengthandpunchhiminthesnout你就该使出全身力气朝它的鼻子奋力一击andhewillturnandswimaway它受到攻击自然就会逃走There
