Additionally, bricks could bear more weight and endure better than rammed earth. Stone can hold under its own weight better than brick, but is more difficult to use. Consequentl

11、，万喜良一点消息也没有。这时已是深秋季节，孟姜女想起丈夫远在北方修长城，一定十分寒冷，就亲手缝制了寒衣，启程上路，要到万里长城去寻找万喜良。一路上，孟姜女历经艰难才来到了长城脚下却得知万喜良已经死了，尸骨被填进了城墙里。孟姜女听后昏倒在地，醒来后，她伤心地痛哭起来，不知哭了多久，突然一声巨响，长城崩塌了几十里，露出了数不清的尸骨。孟姜女咬破手指，把血滴在一具具的尸骨上，她心里暗暗祷告:如果是丈夫的尸骨，血就会渗进骨头，如果不是，血就会流向四方。终于，孟姜女用这种方法找到了万喜良的尸骨。她抱着这堆白骨，又伤心地痛哭起来。 秦始皇看到孟姜女很美丽，想逼她做妃子。孟姜女假意答应了他，但要求秦始皇先办

In fact, it s more than 6 000 kilometers long. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mo

14、untains, through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world. The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period, more walls were put up to defend the borders o

15、f the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the different parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire, Emperor Qin Shi Huang had all the walls joined up. Thus, the Great Wall came into being. The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five

16、horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers, where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the towers as a warning when the enemy came. It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh
