His novels and poetry explore the social ills created by the I

2、ndustrial Revolution and the role of sexuality in human relationships. The dialectic(辩证法) between men and women is a chief theme in Lawrences roduction18851901 An unremarkable beginning David Herbert Lawrence was born to in the mining town of Eastwood Nottinghamshire(诺丁汉郡(英国的一个郡) ) in 1885.

3、After several years Lawrence began work for a factory in Nottingham but eccentric(反常的) for his lack of work enthusiasm and his love of literature. His father was an illiterate coal miner, his mother a genteel schoolteacher determined to lift her children out of the working class. His parents unhappy

4、 marriage and his mothers strong emotional claims on her son later became the basis for Lawrences Sons and Lovers (1913), one of the most important autobiographical novels of this century. 15、ch. The four become friends. Ursula and Birkin become involved, and Gudrun eventually begins a love affair with Gerald. All four are deeply concerned with questions of society, politics, and the relationship between men and women. At a party at Geralds estate, Geralds sister Diana drowns. Gudrun bec

16、omes the teacher and mentor of his youngest sister. Soon Geralds coal-mine-owning father dies as well, after a long illness. After the funeral, Gerald goes to Gudruns house and spends the night with her, while her parents are asleep in another room. Birkin asks Ursula to marry him, and she agrees. G

17、erald and Gudruns relationship, however, becomes stormy. The four holiday in the Alps. Gudrun begins an intense friendship with Loerke, a physically puny but emotionally commanding artist from Dresden. Gerald, enraged by Loerke and most of all by Gudruns verbal abuse and rejection of his manhood, an

18、d driven by the internal violence of his own self, tries to strangle Gudrun. Before he has killed her, however, he realizes that this is not what he wants, and he leaves Gudrun and Loerke and climbs the mountain, eventually slipping into a snowy valley where he falls asleep and freezes to death. The

19、 impact on Birkin of Geralds death is profound; the novel ends a few weeks after Geralds death, with Birkin trying to explain to Ursula that he needs Gerald as he needs her for the perfect relationship with a woman, and Gerald for the perfect relationship with a man. In fact he was eager to love, love with Gudrun, love with Birkin. But the fact that he didnt have the ability to love laid the foundation of tragedy. His abundan

27、ce of material and his lack of spiritual made a great conflict. Birkin is the embodiment of Lawrence himself to a great extent.
