10、s with regard to food vary greatly form culture to culture. What is disgusting to one person can be a delicacy to another. Sometimes we need to change our eating habits. If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit and vegetables may not be available to us.
11、As a result, we have to eat what is different from the food we are used to. Slowly, this strange food may become familiar to us. Our tastes may change, too, and we begin to enjoy eating the food that used to seem unusual to us.Step 3. Warming-up Questions (5 )1). What menu did the author ask for in

(40)Explanation of Difficult Sentences1). (Para 1) I escaped but projected myself into an even worse situation for I chose what seemed to
13、be the best restaurant in Toledo,I wanted the tourist menu.Analysis: This is a complex sentence. For here is used as a conjunction introducing a clause of reason. What seemed to be the best restaurant in Toledo is used as the object of chose; where I announced quickly and in a clear voice that I wan
14、ted the tourist menu is a non-restrictive relative clause modifying the best restaurant. The where-clause again has a that-clause as its object.Translation: 我刚刚逃离一个困境,却有一头陷入了更糟糕的境地。事情是这样的:我选择了在托来多看上去是最好的饭店,在那里我用干脆利落的语言表示我要看旅游菜单。 Example: This did not offend me in the least, for I knew that a m

16、vailable is used here as an attributive post-modifying the twenty-nine dishes. This adjective usually follows the noun or noun phrase it modifies. If ordered is the ellipsis of if they are ordered.Translation: 但是如果从这份旅游菜单提供的29道菜肴里点菜,却有26道要收附加费。Example: I'm afraid I don't have the shoes avail
17、able in your size. She asked me not to say anything until asked.3). (Para 2) Technically, one could order a dinner that would cost the price advertised by the government, but if he did so he would have two soups, one cheap fish and no dessert.Analysis: Technically here means according to the exact d
18、etails of the rules and that-clause is a relative clause modifying a dinner; and advertised by the government is a past participle phrase modifying the price. If he did so can be paraphrased as if the tourist ordered a dinner at the price advertised by the government.Translation: 按条文规定,一位顾客可以按政府公布的价
19、格点一份晚餐,但这种晚餐仅仅包含两种汤,一道廉价的鱼,而且没有甜点。Example: Technically, your proposal is against the law.It is a question that needs careful consideration.He is a man loved by us all.4) . (Para 18) .it was exactly the way it should have been by Toledo standards. Analysis: It should have been by Toledo standards is
20、used as a relative clause modifying the way. Here in which is omitted. The subjunctive mood should have been shows that it is a subjective supposition.Translation: 它确实是按标准的托莱多方式做出来的味道。Example: He hated the way (in which) she talked.5). (Para 18) Special taste produced by hanging the bird without ref
21、rigeration, and much enjoyed by Spanish hunters and countrymen.Analysis: This is an elliptical sentence which can be paraphrased as The special taste was made by hanging . In this sentence, produced by and enjoyed by are two past participle phrases used to modify special taste.Translation: 带一种没经过冷藏而
22、晾干的野味发出来的特殊味道,西班牙猎人和乡下人特别喜爱。Example: The fried chicken served by this fast-food restaurant has a special taste.Step5. Important Words (10)_1. escape v. getaway (from prison or another place of confinement); get free temporarily 逃脱,逃避eg: The prisoners escaped by climbing over the wall. The lion escap

We escaped to an island in the Pacific for our vacation.2. smell v. use the sense of the nose; discovered by the sense of nose; come to know by some natural unexplained ability; have an effect on the nose 闻;嗅出;觉察到;有气味 n. the power of using the nose; a quality that has an effect on
24、the nose 嗅觉;气味eg: Now smell; what do you think this liquid is? Don't strike a match if you smell gas. She picked up the soap and smelled it. I could smell that the milk wasn't fresh. They all have an excellent sense of smell. The air has a sweet smell.3. whereupon adv. (at once) after that 于

26、orning put him in a happy mood. His moods change very quickly; one morning he is cheerful, and the next complaining about his life. She was in one of her bad moods. I wasn't in the mood for helping. 5. scene n. a display of bad temper or behavior that attracts attention in public; a place or an
27、area seen by a viewer; a view of something from a specific place 吵闹;景象;场面eg: They caused a scene at the supermarket. The family reunion scene was the best part of the play. He drunk in the beauty of the scene.6. acknowledge v. recognize; show that one is grateful for; state that one has received 成认;
28、表示感谢;说明已收到eg: He was acknowledged as one of America's finest writers. The president stood up to acknowledge the cheers of the crowd. You have to sign here and acknowledge receipt. I acknowledge the truth of your statement. 7. taste n. special flavor that something has; the ability to enjoy and j
29、udge something; a personal liking for something 味道;鉴赏力;品位;爱好 v. test the taste of food or drink; have a particular taste 品尝;有特殊味道eg: I don't like the taste of fresh fish. She has a very good taste in clothes. Her novels are too violent for my taste. He insisted on pouring the wine for a guest to

42、tep3 Grammar Review (30 ) The teacher explains the four different noun clauses to the students.一、状语从句用作状语的从句叫做状语从句adverbial clause。引导状语从句的关联词是某些附属连词。如:1The sun was out again when I rode up to the farm.当我骑马到达农场时,太阳又落山了。关联词是附属连词when状语从句同状语一样,在句中的位置比拟灵活,可置于句首、句末或句中。如:2When it rains, I usually go to the
43、 office by bus. 逢雨天,我通常乘公共汽车上班。从句置于句首3Stay where you are! 就地停着从句置于句末4I come here every month since I was a child to see my grandfather. 我从小就每月来看我的祖父。从句置于句中状语从句位于句首时,常用逗号分开。如从句较短同时与主句的关系又较密切时,亦可不用逗号。如:5As the car was so small he sold it. 由于车子太小,所以他把车卖了。从句与主句关系密切状语从句位于句末时,其前一般不用逗号。如从句与其前的主句关系不甚密切,尤其是作
44、为添补之词时,其前那么用逗号。如:6She is far too considerate, if I may say so. 恕我直言,她太体谅人了。从句与主句的关系不甚密切状语从句根据其用途可分为时间状语从句、地点状语从句、原因状语从句、结果状语从句、程度状语从句、目的状语从句、条件状语从句、让步状语从句、方式状语从句九种。1时间状语从句adverbial clause of time表时间,其关联词有as, after, before, once, since, till, until, when, whenever, while, as long as, as soon as, now(
45、that)等。如:7As the twilight was beginning to fade, we heard the sound of a carriage.2)地点状语从句adverbial clause of place表地点,其关联词有where, wherever, anywhere, everywhere等。如:8Corn flourishes best where the ground is rich. 谷物在土地肥沃的地方生长的最好。3原因状语从句adverbial clause of cause表原因或理由,其关联词有because, as, since等。如:9Lann
46、y was worried because he hadnt had any letter from Kurt. 兰尼很着急,因为他一直未收到库尔特的信。4结果状语从句adverbial clause of result表结果,其关联词有that, so (that), such that, with the result that等。结果状语从句皆置于主句之后。如:10Have you another sweetheart hidden somewhere that you leave me in the cold ?你是不是暗中又有了情人因而冷落我呢?5程度状语从句adverbial cl
47、ause of degree表动作或状态所到达的程度,其关联词有so (that) ,such that, as (so) far as, as (so) long as, to the degree (extent) that, in so far as等。如:11Her heart beat so that he could hardly breathe.她的心跳得几乎喘不过气来。6目的状语从句adverbial clause of purpose表目的,其关联词有so, so that, in order that等。目的状语从句常用情态动词may (might),有时亦用shall (
48、should)和will (would);现在这种从句亦可用can (could)。目的状语从句多置于主句之后。如:12Ill ring him up at once so he shouldnt wait for me. 我马上给他挂 ,让他别等我了。7条件状语从句adverbial clause of condition表条件,条件有真实条件和非真实条件两种。前者表现实的或可能变为现实的条件,后者表非现实的或不可能或不大可能变为现实的条件。关于非真实条件,已在本书“虚拟语气一章讲过。这里只讨论真实条件。真实条件状语从句用直陈语气,其关联词有if, unless, suppose, supposing (that), assuming (that), providing (that), provided (that), in the event (that), just so (that), given (that), in case (that), on condition (that), as (so) long as等。这种状语从句可置于主句之前或之后。如:13If the weather is fine tomorrow, w
