1、Unit 1 PeopleI. Teaching MaterialThis part is the reading part of Unit 1 from the Reading Expert (level 5) which mainly talks about the life experience of Beatrix Potter, a fairytale writer. It is connected with students childhood, thus can raise their interest to learn. Students have to use skimmin
2、g and scanning to understand the text, so there should be plenty of practice. . Teaching ObjectsStudents at level 5 are always energetic, eager to learn and express themselves. Also they have learned some basic words, which can help them to do a rough reading by themselves first and show their own o
3、pinions. While students at this stage are usually scatterbrained and naughty, and their English competence varies, the teaching content should be neither too difficult nor too easy and teacher has to consider how to draw their attentions.Teaching Objectives1. Teaching Procedure (45mins)Step 1 Warming-up (5mins)Play a clip about Benjamin Bunnyand give a rough introduction about the story, then lead to the writer - Beatrix Potter to introduce the protagonist and the main
7、idea of the reading article.Step 2 Skimming (7mins)Ask students to read the first and the last sentence of each paragraphto finish exercise 5.If students can get the answer correctly, teacher continues to introduce the skill - skimming. If they cant, teacher can correct them during the introduction
8、about skimming.Skimming: Looking quickly through the text to get a general idea of what it is about.How to skim: Usually read the first and the last sentence of the text or paragraph. Step 3 Scanning (15mins)1. Ask students to read the text and finish the table within 5 minutes.Stages ExperienceChil

15、 held in your country?If you were to listen to his mother, you would think that Terry Fox was “a very ordinary young man.” Yet the legacy of his short life has been anything but ordinary. He has been the subject of two movies and two songs, has had a mountain named after him, and has appeared on the
16、 face of a coin. At the age of 18, Terry was diagnosed with bone cancer, and while having his leg amputated above the knee, the suffering of other cancer patients he had seen convinced him that he should do something. So, he decided to attempt to raise funds for cancer research by, incredibly, runni
17、ng across Canada and showing that he was no less of a man just 10 because cancer had claimed one of his legs. On 12 April 1980, Terry Fox set out on his journey. Beginning at St. Johns, his goals were to run to Vancouver, a distance of more than 8,000km, and to raise $24 million in donations, one do
18、llar for each Canadian. Setting off on his journey with one natural and one artificial leg, Fox somehow managed to cover a distance of 42km a day, approximately the length of a marathon. After 143 days he was well over half way to achieving his goal of crossing Canada, but that was to be his last da
19、y of running. Terrys cancer had spread to his lungs, and he, along with his dream of finishing his “Marathon of Hope,” was dying. Before passing away, he helped set up the Terry Fox Run to commemorate his Marathon of Hope. Each year people help raise funds for cancer research by collecting donations and running a short marathon in his memory. Upon Terrys insistence, the Run is not competitive: There are no winners, no ribbons, no prizes. Today his Run is held annually in over 50 countries and has raised more than $300 million for cancer research. H
