2、见前面有一道竹木编成的篱笆挡住了它的去 路.It cast a sidelong glance at the fence, lowered its neck and lunged at the fence, hoping to knock it down.公羊斜着眼睛看看,便弯下脖子呼的一声撞上去,想把篱笆撞倒.The fence remained intact but the ram injured its own horns.结果篱笆纹丝不动,它反把自己的椅角碰伤了.If it had not injured its horns, the ram would have persisted

10、可是,自己的丈夫呢Haughty and arrogant, he sat under the big canopy driving the carriage for Yan Zi, yet considering himself unexcelled in the world.他坐在车上的大伞下为晏子驾驭马车,却趾高气扬,不可一世.She was much ashamed of her husband.妻子看了十分羞愧.As soon as the coachman returned home, his wife asked for a divorce.车夫一进家门,妻子就提由要和他离婚.T

11、he coachman was baffled, unable to make head or tail of this, and asked angrily: 车夫一时莫名其妙,摸不着头脑,便生气地问:"A divorce? What is your reason?"“要离婚你的理由是什么The wife answered:妻子答复:"Yan Zi isless than 6 chi (Chinese unit of length, 1/3 metre) tall, but his heart is filled with aspirations and his

12、 mind with knowledge.“晏子虽然身高没有六尺,但是他胸怀大志,满腹经纶.Though he is the prime minister, he is courteous and treats people prudently when he goes out.他身为相国,外由时,对人彬彬有礼,谦虚谨慎.But what about you?你呢You are fully 8 chi tall, but you forget that you are only a coachman.身高足有八尺,可是你忘了,你不过是个车夫.By the side of the prime m

13、inister, you dare to look so cocky,consider yourself always in the right, and brandish the whip to urge the horse on in utter complacency.却在相国身旁神气十足,自以为是,挥鞭催马,得意忘形.You are so immodest that I can't live with you any longer."你这样不知谦逊,我不能再和你生活下去了.Upon hearing his wife's words, the coachman

14、felt much ashamed.车夫听了妻子的话,觉得很惭愧.Thereafter he became very careful and prudent in doing things and treated people modestly.从此,他做事小合谨慎,待人谦逊.Yan Zi noticed the big change in the coachman's behavior and couldn't understand why. So he asked the coachman.晏子看到车夫变化很大,不知为什么,就询问车夫.The coachman told Y

15、an Zi his wife's criticism in detail.车夫把妻子对自己的批评一五一十地告诉了晏子.At this, Yan Zi was deeply moved. Later Yan Zi recommended him to be a da fu (a senior official).晏子听了,感慨不已.后来,晏子推荐这位车夫由任大夫.04.牛首马肉One day, Ling Gong, King of the State of Qi, had a sudden whim.一天,齐灵公心血来潮.He liked to see women wearing men

16、's clothes and let all the women in his harem do so.喜欢看女扮男装,并且让内宫的女人都这样做.Soon afterwards, all the women in the whole country followed the fashion and dressed like men.不久,全国的女人赶时髦,都女扮男装.Seeing the whole country follow this example, Ling Gong became angry, and gave orders to the officials in all p

17、arts of the ountry: 可是,灵公看全国都这样,就生气了,又命令各地官吏:"Whenever you see women dressed like men, you are to tear up their clothes and rip their waistbands."“只要发现女扮男装的人,就撕破她们的衣服,扯断她们的腰带.But this trend among women to dress like men couldn't be discouraged.可是,这股女扮男装的风气,仍然没有能够刹住.One day, when the pr

18、ime minister Yan Zi came to court for an audience with him, Ling Gong asked him: 一天,宰相晏子朝见灵公,灵公问晏子:"I ordered all the officials to forbid women to wear men's clothes.“我让各地官吏禁止女人穿男人的服装.Whenever they see them doing so, they are to tear up their clothes and rip their waistbands without excepti

19、on.只要看到,就一律撕破衣服,扯断腰带.But this trend couldn't be stopped. What exactly is the reason?"可就是禁止不了.这究竟是什么原因Yan Zi answered:晏子答复说:"Your Majesty, you allow the women in your harem to dress like men, but you forbid the common people to do so.“大王,您让内宫女扮男装,却不让百姓这样做;This is like hanging up the hea

20、d of an ox outside the door, but selling horsemeat inside.这就好比门外桂的是牛头,而门里卖的是马肉.How can that be done?这怎么行呢If women in your harem are rorbidden to wear men's clothes, then how would the people outside the palace dare to do so any longer?" 如果宫内禁止女扮男装,那么宫外的人怎么再敢这样做呢Ling Gong nodded his head aga

21、in and again, and said: "What you have said is right! What you have said is right!"灵公连连点头,说:“你说得对!你说得对!Ling Gong ordered his officials to do according to what Yan Zi had said.灵公命令官吏根据晏子的话去办.Sure enough, in less than one month, the trend of dressing like men among women in the whole country

22、 was stopped.果然,不到一个月,全国各地女扮男装的风气就刹住了.05.反唇相讥Yan Zi of the State of Qi was sent on a mission to the State of Chu.齐国的晏子生使到楚国.The King of Chu intended to humiliate the State of Qi toYan Zi's face.楚王有意要当着晏子的面侮辱齐国.One day, the King of Chu gave a banquet for Yan Zi. Just一天,楚王摆了酒席招待晏子.when they were e

25、sty, I heard that when orange trees grown in thesouth of the Huai River are transplanted to the north of Huai River,they become trifoliate orange trees.“大王,我听说生长在淮南的橘树,移植到淮北就会变成积树.Outwardly the leaves of orangetrees and those of trifoliate orange trees look alike, but the tastesof their fruits are e

28、r sacrifices to the mountain deity to pray for rain.他想去祭祀山神求雨.His prime minister Yan Zi said to him:"Your Majesty, don't do that.宰相晏子对他说:“大王,不要去.It is no use to beg the mountain deity for mercy.求山神没有用处.The stones in the mountains are like his bones and sinews;山上的石头,就好似山的筋骨;the soil in the m

29、ountains is like his muscle; the grass and trees in the mountains ane like his hair.山上的泥土,就好似山的肌肉;山上的草木,就好似山的毛发.When it doesn't rain for a long time, the hair of the mountain deity will wither and his muscles will be seared in the sun.长久不下雨,山神的毛发也枯死了,肌肉也晒焦了.Won't the mountain deity be anxiou

30、s for rain too? 山神难道就不着急要雨吗If he could make it rain, it would have rained long ago."如果山神能够使天下雨,那么雨早已下了.Jing Gong said: "All right, we won't beg the mountain deity. Then how about begging Hebo (the river deity)?" 景公说:“不求山神也罢,那么去求河伯吧!"Your Majesty, it's no use either,"

31、 replied Yan Zi."晏子又说:“大王,不行.Water is the territory of I-Iebo.水是河伯的国土.Fish and soft-shelled turtles are his subjects.鱼鳖是河伯的百姓.When it hasn't rained for a long time, the water in the river will dry up, which means that Hebo will lose his territory;天不下雨,河里的水干了,就等于河伯的国土丧失了 ;his subjects like f

32、ish and soft-shelled turtles will all die of thirst.河伯的百姓,像鱼呀,鳖呀,也统统要干死了.If Hebo could make it rain; it would have rained long ago.如果河伯能够叫天下雨,那么雨早就下了.What is the use of praying to Hebo?" 去祈求河伯又有什么用呢Convinced by Yan Zi's words, Jing Gong no longer prayed to the deities for rain.景公听了晏子的这番话,就不

33、再去向神求雨了.07.鲁班造鹊During the Spring and Autumn Period (770 476 B.C.), a skillful craftsman named Gongshu Zi inthe State of Lu, known to people as "Lu Ban", made a magpie with bamboo and wood.春秋时期,鲁国有个能工巧匠公输子,人称“鲁班.他用竹木造了 一只喜鹊.A machine was installed in this magpie which, when started, could f

34、ly high like a real bird. It actually flew continually for three days and nights before it landed.这只木制的喜鹊,安装着机关.只要一开动它,就能像真的鸟一样展 翅高飞.它一连飞了三天三夜才降落下来.Gongshu Zi greatly appreciated this excellent work of his own.公输子非常欣赏自己这件得意的作品.When Mo Zi (Master of the Mohist School) heard of this, he went immediate

35、ly to see Gongshu Zi and said to him: 墨子知道了这件事情以后,马上去见公输子,对他说 :"As you know, it takes an ordinary carpenter a very short time to make a linchpin of a wheel with the minimumamount of timber. A vehicle with a linchpin inserted into each end of an axle can carry many things andbear a heavy load of

36、 50 dan(1 hectolitre). But you took painstaking effort to make this wooden magpie. Though pretty and able to fly, it cannot compare with the linchpin in terms of practical value. Things made by a carpenter should be useful for people's life, so that everyone will praise him for his cleverness an

37、d skill. Otherwise, he is bound to be derided."“你知道,普通的木匠只花很短的时间,用极少的木料就能做成车 辖.将车辖插在车轴的两端,这样的车子可以装载许多东西,能经受 五十石的重压.而这只你费了心血做成的木头喜鹊,虽然会飞也很漂 亮,但是却不如车辖那样有实用价值.木匠做由来的东西,要对人们 的生活有帮助,大家才会夸他心灵手巧;否那么难免被人笑骂.08.多言何益One day, Zi Qin asked his master Mo Zi:天,子禽问他的老师墨子"Master, is there any good at all o

38、f talking much?"“老师,多说话到底有没有好处Mo Zi thought for a while, and answered:墨子想了一下答复说:"If one talks too much, what good is there?"“话要是说得太多了,还有什么好处呢Then, he told Zi Qin:接着,又告诉子禽说:"Toads and frogs croak and flies buzz day and night until they are parched and dry in the mouth, yet nobody

39、listens to them.“蛤蟆、青蛙、苍蝇白天黑夜不停地叫,叫得口干舌燥,可是却没有 人听它们的.But a rooster in a chicken coop crows only a few times at dawn, and everyone knows that when it crows, daylight,is coming and the whole world will be awakened.但是,鸡棚里的雄鸡只在黎明时啼叫两三次,大家知道鸡啼就要天 亮,天下皆醒.Therefore, there is no use talking too much.所以,多说话没
