1、Song of Myself by Walt WhitmanSong of Myself is one of Walt Whitmans excellent poetry of The Leaves of Grass. Afterreading the whole poem I cant help feeling soul-sublimation and getting a new horizon.This poem is of rich connotation and magnificent prospect. By describing a harmoniouspicture of nat

2、ural landscape with human being, Walt Whitman expressed the harmoniousbeauty of the modern civilization with primitive nature. He thought nature and human beingshould be frank and kind to each other, we can find this idea in the following lines, I harborfor good or bad, I permit to speak at every ha

He revealed beautiful pictures of nature and people, as he put in the poem Mytread scares the wood-duck and wood-duck in my distance and day-long ramble. 4、ture although my tread scares the wood-duck.In Walt Whitmans eyes, harmony did not only lie between nature and human being, butalso referred to the harmonious integration of peoples soul and physical body. He thoughtthat peoples soul and body were of same importance and equality and they coexisted w

5、itheach other, and with the absence of any one, the person could not be perfectly healthy. Clearsoul was vital for anyone. In the following line, we can figure out this idea, Clear andsweet is my soul, and clear and sweet is all that is not my soul.At first sight of this poem, Walt Whitman seemed to

6、 overpraise himself, but after thinkingtwice, you will find myself is not the individual oneself but the big myself- Americanlabouring people who tried to change the nature and struggled to reconstruct the new land.He spoke highly of American spirit-freedom and openness.The poem mainly based on Whit

7、mans own experience in the wild vast west frontier ofAmerica. From this poems content it is not hard to find that Whitmans witness of the freeand casual way of peoples life contributed to this poem. In the poem, he revealed manydifferent life situations of diligent American labouring people, which h

8、ad one thing incommon that American people were curious about the surrounding world and workedhard to make their life better.Besides freedom, American people attach great importance to equality, and it is noexception in Song of Myself. The first lines showed Whitmans idea of equality, I celebratemys

9、elf, and sing myself, And what I assumeyou shall assume, For every atom belonging tome as good belongs to you. From theses lines, we can see that in Whitmans opinion,everyone was born equal and of no difference in the nature. His spirit was free and open, hedid not judge a person by his or her colou

10、r, religion or something like that, he thought I andyou should be the same, because every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.After reading the whole poem, I am deeply impressed by the poets active and passionateattitude toward life. In the poem, the words sparkle and scud jumped into my eye

11、s, bywhich I almost heard the crisp cut sound and saw the shinning of the scissors. These twowords made his line alive by offering us a sensible picture.I exist as I am, that is enough, If no other in the world be aware I sit content, And if eachand all be aware I sit content. from these lines, we c

12、an find that the poet was extremelyconfident about himself and what he had done, he was not afraid of other peoples judge,because he had a active attitude toward life and this faith lived firmly in his heart.He was not only confident about the current himself, but also confident about the future. He

This day before dawn I ascended a hill and lookd at thecrowded heaven, And I said to my spirit When we become the enfolders of those orbs, andthe pleasure and knowledge of every thing in them, shall we be filld and satisfied then? Andmy spirit said No, we but level

14、 that lift to pass and continue beyond. From these lines, wecan clearly see that the poem talked with his own soul whether to continue or to have a rest,and his clean and sweet soul told him that seeking had no end. This is exactly one ofAmerican spirit-forge ahead forever.Whats more, his optimism w

15、as reflected in his attitude toward death. When mentioning theserious topic of Death, many people tend to be afraid and shrink back, while Whitman sawit as a normal process of life and nothing to be afraid of . He put in his poem, Has any onesupposed it lucky to be born? I hasten to inform him or he

16、r it is just as lucky to die, and Iknow it. I pass death with the dying and birth with the new-washed baby, andI am notcontained between my hat and boots. He thought death was a lucky thing like birth, whichreminds me of the the Chinese Taoism theory-everything should follow the natural law andnot try to struggle against it.To sum it up, by reading this long poem I have a overall understanding about the them ofSong of Myself and the poet Whitman as well.
