5、ys shorter and also much lighter because they are made of artificial materials in stead of wood. For anyone who wants to try surfi ng, the only esse ntial things are waves and a board. There are a few other thin gs, however, that most surfers find importa nt: a rope to attach on e of their ankles to

6、 the board and therefore stop the board going a long way when they fall off; wax, which they put on the surface of the board to help their feet stick to it; and a wetsuit to help them keep warm in cold water. The southwest of England is an example of a place where surfers usually n eed wetsuits, eve

7、n in the summer, because the water is so cold. Surfing has bee n a professi onal sport for many years, and the very best surfers are 2 able to make a living from it. Most of the best professional surfers in the last thirty years, both men and women, have been American or Australian, but surfers from

Because I want stude nts to thoroughly study the material and excha nge their ideas with3 each other in the classroom, I have a rule no laptops, iPads,

13、 phones, etc. Whenstudents were told my rule in adva nee of the class, some of them were not happy. Most stude nts assume that my reas ons for this rule in clude un pleasa nt experie nces in the past with stude nts misus ing tech no logy. There s a bit of truth to that. Some stude nts assume that I

14、am an ti- tech no logy. There s no truth to that at all. I love tech no logy and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my stude nts. The real reas on why I ask stude nts to leave tech no logy at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly

15、engage complex ideas. In terrupti ons by tech no logy ofte n break con versati on and allow for too much depe ndence on outside inf ormati on for ideas. I want stude nts to dig deep with in themselves for in spirati on and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differe ntly and make connecti

I ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect stude nt satisfact ion with the environment that I create. Stude nts realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that he
