5、n their grade all along in my class, I give a final because Elon requires it. It actually represents the final 10% in the class. I feel frustrated when students tell me a "final exam" in one of their classes will be less than 15 minutes. I think some people are defaulting.I anticipate brea

16、l assessment, and it's legitimate to me. The semester seems already so short, not in psycological terms, but in terms of time to spend as a class exploring new things - the final exam is a period I include when I think about my class - we need every class we have to cover what I think we should

17、or have full, thorough discussion. I think it's a shame when I hear that there are faculty who give "b.s." exams because they "have" to - that seems to me like someone who doesn't really value the shortness of time we spend together - I don't think we should n"ha

18、ve" to do a specific type of thing on this time (I have a mix of final exams, presentations, and "see what you've learned" kinds of things, not just exams or papers), but I think we either should eliminate final exam period entirely (and use our last class for whatever this is) or

19、 keep it and care about its meaning.For seminars, I often have final papers due during the exam period, and we all get together for more of a social gathering than actual class time.When I give a take-home test. 20、xams, assessing the students through a variety of other assignments and exercises instead. I therefore find the rule requiring me to meet with students during exam time, regardless of whether or not I am giving an exam, unhelpful and unproductive. If my students have met my requirements, and have pr

21、oduced work through which I can assess them, I feel it would be more productive for them to be using that time to prepare for other finals, than with meeting with me because the university says they have to.No. As it is, I suppose I wish there was another day or two for more integrated recap.#4 Comm

22、ents (If you also teach a lab for your course, what is your policy regarding the last week of classes and final exam period for the lab?):I don't teach a lab.Lab final in last week of classesDepending on how many lab classes there are in a semester, I typically give the last exam (non-cumulative

23、) during the last week of classes and then we do not meet during final exams. One reason for this is scheduling since students may have 2 final exams during the same slot given the nature of the scheduling of labs (a student may have a Mon bio lab from 1:30-4:30 and a chemistry lab on Wed 1:30-4:30,

24、 both of which would have the same final exam time). Another rationale is that many lab courses I teach are combined lecture/lab - so students receive 1 grade. I feel that it is too much of a burden for students to have 2 cumulative exams for 1 course).This sometimes occurs for introductory lab cour

25、ses that carry 1 sh of credit since they depend on the calendar for each academic year. In some years, the 2d lab practical happens in the week before finals week or the Monday and Tuesday before reading day and in other eyars we are forced to give it during finals week. It is my impression that the

26、 students prefer not having to study for both the final exam and the final lab practical during the final exam period. I do not use the final exam period for my upper-level labs that carry 0 sh of credit since the lecture exam includes questions about their lab experiences.Give lab exam at scheduled

27、 exam time.No final during exam period. Often use last lab for cumulative exam or periodic exam/practical.I typically have a lab up to a week before the final exam period. Thus, for those essays, I follow the departments guidelines, although in both cases, the assessment essay counts as a portion of the final exam grade.Peri

Periodic exams focus on more recently covered material, but concepts from many previous chapters must be applied r

40、outinely. Usually, we do call our periodic exams "cumulative" but do not call them "final" exams. During the final exam periods, we routinely use a separate and uniformly comprehensive exam that has been designed for a final overall assessment. It is an important part of our prog

41、ram assessment.I would like to see a policy in which some kind of serious academic work is required during the exam period. To do otherwise causes a general erosion of the final exam period for the campus as a whole. Students place a premium on leaving early and pressure the few faculty who do requi

42、re a serious exam to lighten up. As our students are getting more and more proficient academically, we need to expect more, not less. I hope Council will take an assertive role of leadership for academic rigor.More concern on Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week while students may exaggerate, I&#

43、39;m hearing about a lot of cancelled classes and it concerns me. I think the composition of our student body is such that the short break is no longer working and I'd love to add a day at the beginning and one at the end of the semester to give the full week off to allow travel, etc."Subje

44、ct" courses like grammar, literature, etc get a final exam - part of which is take-home. Comp courses never have these kinds of exams.For writing-intensive courses I give an out-of-class exam paper due on the exam day, and then have an in-class activity as well.Final exam period in-class cumula

ICC has not in several years had the students tickets ready by end of classes and they expect professors to hand them out during final exam week. ICC

It is thier job - not the professors job during final exam week.Students take a short oral exam last week (10 minutes/3 questions)Final exam period paper - but always in conjunction with an inclass component; sometime

This may be resulting in a disconnect between written policy and faculty practice.
