1、today id like to share a famous poem with you,which name is “when you are old”.this poem was written in 1893 and it is one of william butler yeats(1865-1939) most popular poems. as with many of his works, the poem is influenced by greek mythology. in this case, it is the legend of helen of troy, whi

2、ch inspires yeats.then,back to the poem,i will read it firstin the poem when you are old, it presumes an old lady nodding by the fire and recalled the “soft look” and the true love she ever had and now they had gone with the wind. the poem strives to depict how the woman the poet loves will realize

3、in her old age that she has missed the opportunity to own the true love. in fact, this is a real description of the poets love. in 1889 yeats met his great love, maud gonne (1866-1953), an actress and irish revolutionary who became a major landmark in his life and imagination. how ever, she married

4、major john macbride in 1903, and this episode inspired yeats to write down this heart-stirring poem. by writing this poem, yeats attempts to diminish her beauty and enhance his greatness, yet in the process, he ends up making himself look like a brooding man unable to get over this his love for this

5、 woman. while many critics believe that the poem serves to show the womans regret for not realizing his deep love for her, it also presents the resentment he feels toward her for not reciprocating his love. yeatss usage of imagery and diction make both the tones of regret and resentment found in the

6、 poem possible. the ambiguity of the last stanza of the poem, another issue debated by critics, further illustrates that the poem is not only about the regret the woman feels when she becomes aware of what she has lost; it strengthens the argument that this work is actually about the resentment he w

9、rey slowly read all serve to calm readers, lull them into the same drowsiness that the narrator imagines the subject of his poem will be in so many years time. the second stanza is an expression of his love for her, claiming that only he loved her beyond physical attraction. whereas others loved you

10、r beauty with love false of true , he loved her pilgrim soul. in other words, he loved her ever-changing (hence the word pilgrim) personality; he loved her all the time, no matter the sorrows of your changing face. delivering the main emotional impact of the poem, the last stanza reveals how his lov

11、e was never returned. the final two lines describe how love evaded them both: the final two lines show a very strong image; the night sky is traditionally a very romantic thing, and the idea of love itself is to hide among the stars is a powerful one. the punctuation changes in the final stanza. whe

12、reas the first two are rife with commas, slowing the pace and inducing a dreamlike state of calm, the third omits almost all punctuation - the last three lines are one continuous sentence with no added punctuation. it is as if the narrator has finally accepted that his love will always be unrequited

13、, and he stops dreaming about the futurethe whole poetry is written in narration. the conjunction word and is used for seven times in the head of the poem. such as: and nodding by the fire;and slowly read; and bending down beside. this word is used in repetition as to link the movements of the old w

14、oman coherently. and the picture in the readers mind will become more vivid. after reading this poem,i seems to have got 2 things.just a joke.i mean we should be more careful when we making such a lifelong decision.through clever use of punctuation, and the repeated use of “and”, yeats manipulates t

15、he pace of the poem and encourages the reader to slow down. the subsequent effect, therefore, lends itself to the slower pace of life that accompanies old age.when you are old is narrated by an anonymous man, who is expressing his deep and undying love for a woman who has, thus far, rejected his adv

16、ances. although yeats never makes direct reference to himself with the use of the first person singular, his use of allusion leaves little doubt as to who the “one man” may be.the first stanza, asks the woman to consider her future and what her life will be like when she reaches old age. he believes

17、 that she will no doubt reflect upon her youth and lost beauty. “the soft look /your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep”. as alluded to above, it is the repeated use of “and” throughout this stanza, which sets the slow and very deliberate tempo of the poem.this slightly melancholic opening, is

18、 followed by a stanza, which asks the woman to view her current situation from the perspective of her future self, when she was “loved”. interestingly, the word “loved” is used four times in this quatrain and implies that the many who “loved your moments of glad grace,/and loved your beauty” will cease to be enamoured with the passing this sad and reminiscent poe
