Fathers Day has become important in North America. And businesses found it was a good way t

By the way(顺便说一下), very few countries have a Fathers Day, though (尽管)some have a Childrens Day, or a special day for boys and another for girls. More and more countries are having Mothers Day, so maybe Fathers Day will also

3、become popular before too long. Now, what do people in North America do on Fathers Day? The newspapers, radios, and TV tell children what they should do- buy, buy, buy, buy, buy a Fathers Day present for your father. They even tell a wife to buy, buy, buy, and buy a Fathers Day present- not for her

4、father but for her husband, even if(及时) he is not yet (还)a father. And they tell grandchildren to buy, buy, buy, and buy a Fathers Day present for their grandfathers. The important thing to remember about Fathers Day is that American Children can show their love to their fathers in a more open way.A

5、 Traveler and A Taxi DriverA traveler came out of the airport. He asked every taxi driver his name. Then he took the third one. “How much does it cost for the whole day?” the man asked. “100 dollars,” said the taxi driver. This was very expensive, but the man said it was OK.The taxi driver took the

6、traveler everywhere. He showed him all the parks and museums in the city. In the evening they went back to the hotel. The traveler gave the taxi driver 100 dollars and said, “What about tomorrow?” The taxi driver said, “Tomorrow? Its another 100 dollars.” The man said, “Thats OK!” The next day, the

7、taxi driver took the traveler around the city again. In the evening they went back to the hotel. The man gave the taxi driver 100 dollars again and said, “Im going home tomorrow.” The taxi driver was sorry because he liked the traveler and, above all, 100 dollars a day was a lot of money. “Where are

8、 you from?” he asked. “Im from New York.” “New York!” said the taxi driver. “I have a sister in New York. Her name is Susan Nash. Do you know her?” “Of course I know her. She gave me 200 dollars for you!” .Harvard UniversityHarvard is the oldest and the most famous university in the USA. And it is a

9、lso one of the earliest universities in the USA. People started to build it in 1636. Two years later, the first school term started. There were only nine students. On September 14, 1638, a priest (牧师) named John Harvard died. He left more than 400 books and half of his wealth (财产) to the university.

10、 Then, the university changed its name to Harvard. At first Harvard was very small. And then it became bigger and bigger. Harvard Medical School started in 1782. Harvard Law School started in 1817. In 1908, the business school opened. Now, Harvard students can study many different kinds of subjects.

11、 Many famous people ever studied at Harvard, like US presidents, writers, business people and other important people. They were once students there. Now, people from all over the world go to Harvard for their study.Going to the Sun During the NightWhen Americans were getting ready to send their firs

12、t men to the moon, an old Irishman (爱尔兰人) was watching them on television in a bar.There was an Englishman in a bar, too, and he said to the Irishman, “Americans are very clever, arent they? That is much farther away than the moon, you know.” The Englishman was very surprised when he heard this. “Oh, yes, it is,” he said. “But the sun is too hot for people to go to.” The Irishman laughed and answe

14、red, “Well, the Irish are not stupid, you know. We wont go to the sun during the day, of course. Well go there during the night.” .聪明反被聪明误An old woman suddenly became blind. She promised (许诺)a doctor a lot of money if he could make her see again .“If you fail, youll get nothing .”The doctor agreed t

15、o help her.The doctor soon found out what was wrong with her .He decided not to cure(治疗)her right now. Instead(而是)each time he went to see the old woman ,he took some of her things .After he took away everything, he decided to cure the blind woman and asked her to pay a lot of money. When the old wo

16、man could see again she saw there was nothing in her house and she didnt want to pay the money .The doctor took her before a judge(法官).“What the doctor said is true,” she said to the judge. “But I dont think Im cured because I still cant see any of the things in my house.”The old woman won her case

17、(案子)and the doctor went away without getting his pay .The City Was Built on the FieldIt was a winter morning. The weather was sunny and it was warmer outside than in the room. Mrs Smith sat on the step (台阶) of a shop, looking at the busy street. Just at that moment a man came up with a map in his ha

18、nd. He came close to Mrs Smith. “Excuse me, madam(女士),” said the man. “Could you please tell me the way to the nearest hospital?” Mrs Smith looked at him up and down(上上下下). As he looked like a farmer, Mrs Smith wanted to play a joke (开玩笑) on him. Then she said, “Lie down(躺下) in the middle of the street and you will soon be sent to a hospital.” “Please set(举) an example for me,” said the man.
