Every day, I learned fromyou. You made me a better President, and you made mea better man.I first came to

3、Chicago when I was in my earlytwenties, still trying to figure out who I was; stillsearchingforapurposeto my life.Itwasinneighborhoods not far from here where I began workingwith church groupsin the shadows ofclosedsteelmills.It was on these streets where I witnessed the power offaith, and the quiet

6、ting; that We,the People, through the instrument of our democracy,can form a more perfect union.This is the great gift our Founders gave us. Thefreedomtochaseourindividualdreams throughoursweat, toil, and imagination and the imperative tostrive together as well, to achieve a greater good.For 240 yea

It s what pulled immigrants andrefugees across oc

8、eans and the Rio Grande, pushed women to reach for the ballot, powered workers to organize.It s why GIs gave their lives at Omaha Beach and IwoJima; Iraq and Afghanistan and why men and womenfrom Selma to Stonewall were prepared to give theirs as well.So that s what we mean when we say America isexc

9、eptional.Not that ournationhas been flawlessfromthe start,but that we have shown thecapacitytochange,and make life better for those who follow.Yes, our progress has been uneven. The work ofdemocracyhasalwaysbeen hard,contentiousandsometimesbloody.For everytwo stepsforward,itoftenfeels we take one st

But the long sweep ofAmericahas been definedby forwardmotion,a constantwidening of our founding creed to embrace all, and notjust some.IfI had toldyou eightyearsago that Americawouldreverse a great recession, reboot our auto industry,and unleash the longest stretch of job creation in ourhis

You answered people s hopes, andbecause of you, by almost every measure, America is abetter, stronger place than it was when we started.In ten days, the world

I committed toPresidentElectTrumpthatmyadministrationwouldensurethesmoothestpossibletransition,justasPresident Bush did for me. Because it s up to all ofus to make sure our government can

14、 helpus meet themanychallenges we still face.We have what we need todo so. 15、 should be ours.But that potential will be realized only if ourdemocracyworks.Onlyifourpoliticsreflectsthedecency of the our people.Only ifallof us, regardlessof our party affiliation or particular interest, helprestore the sense of common purpose that we so badlyneed right now.That s what I want to

16、 focus on tonight thestateof our democracy.Understand,democracy does not requireuniformity.Our founders quarreled and compromised, and expectedus to do the same. But they knew that democracy doesrequire a basic sense of solidarity the idea thatfor all our outward differences, we are all in thistoget

17、her; that we rise or fall as one.There have been moments throughoutour historythatthreatened to rupture that solidarity. The beginningof thiscenturyhas been one of those times.A shrinkingworld, growing inequality; demographic change and thespecter of terrorism these forces haven t justtested our sec

19、ithout a sense thateveryone has economic opportunity. Today, the economyisgrowing again;wages,incomes,home values,andretirementaccountsarerisingagain;povertyisfalling again. The wealthy are paying a fairer shareoftaxeseven as thestockmarketshattersrecords.Theunemployment rate isneara tenyearlow. The

20、 uninsuredrate has never, ever been lower. Health care costs arerisingatthe slowestratein fiftyyears.And ifanyonecan puttogethera plan thatis demonstrablybetterthantheimprovementsweve made toourhealthcaresystem that covers as many people at less cost I willpublicly support it.That,afterall,is why we

21、 serve tomake people s lives better, not worse.But for all the real progress weve made, we knowit s not enough. 22、r democratic principles. While the topone percent has amassed a bigger share of wealth andincome, too many families, in inner cities and ruralcounties,have been leftbehind thelaidofffactoryworker;thewaitressandhealthcareworkerwhostruggle to pay the bills convinced that the gameisfixedagainstthem,tha

23、ttheirgovernmentonlyserves the interests of the powerful a recipe formore cynicism and polarization in our politics.There are no quick fixes to this longterm trend.I agree thatourtradeshouldbe fairand not justfree.But the next wave of economic dislocation won t comefrom overseas. It will come from t

24、he relentless paceof automation that makes many good, middleclass jobsobsolete.And so we must forge a new social compact toguaranteeallourkidsthe educationtheyneed; togiveworkersthepower to unionizeforbetter wages;toupdate the socialsafetynettoreflectthe way we livenowandmakemorereformstothetaxcodes

We canargue abouthow tobest achievethese goals.But we cant be complacent about the goals themselves. For if wedon tcre

26、ateopportunityforallpeople,thedisaffectionand division thathas stalledourprogresswill only sharpen in years to come.There s a second threat to our democracy oneas old as our nation itself. After my election, therewas talkofa postracialAmerica. Such a vision,howeverwellintended, was never realistic.

27、For race remains apotent and often divisive force in our society. Ive lived long enough to know that race relations arebetter than they were ten, or twenty, or thirty yearsago you can see it not just in statistics, but inthe attitudes of young Americans across the politicalspectrum.But we re not whe

28、re we need to be. All of us havemore work to do. After all, if every economic issue isframed as a strugglebetween a hardworkingwhite middleclass and undeserving minorities, then workers of allshadeswillbe leftfightingforscraps whilethe2016 全新精品资料 - 全新公文范文 -全程指导写作独家原创8/23.wealthy withdraw further int

29、o their private enclaves.If we decline to invest in the children of immigrants,just because they don t look like us, we diminish theprospects of our own children because those brownkidswillrepresentalargershareof America sworkforce.And our economy doesn thave to be a zerosumgame. Last year, incomes

30、rose for all races, all agegroups, for men and for women.Goingforward,we mustupholdlawsagainstdiscrimination in hiring, in housing, in educationandthe criminaljusticesystem.That swhatourConstitutionand highestidealsrequire.But laws alonewon t be enough. Heartsmust change. Ifourdemocracyis to work in

31、 this increasingly diverse nation, eachone of us must trytoheed the adviceof one ofthe greatcharactersinAmerican fiction,AtticusFinch,who said“ You never reallyunderstand a person untilyouconsiderthingsfrom hispointof viewuntilyou climbinto his skin and walk around in it.”For blacksand otherminoriti

33、 advantages, but whos seen his world upended by economic, cultural, andtechnological change.For white Americans, it means acknowledging thatthe effects of slavery and Jim Crow didn t suddenlyvanish in the 60s; that when minority groups voicediscontent,they re not justengagingin reverseracismor pract

34、icing political correctness; that when theywage peaceful protest, they re not demanding specialtreatment,buttheequaltreatmentourFounderspromised.FornativebornAmericans,itmeansremindingourselves that the stereotypes about immigrants todaywere said,almostwordforword, about theIrish,Italians, and Poles

For too many of us, its becomesafer to retreat into our own bubbles, whether in ourneighborhoodsorcollegecampuses orplacesofworshipor

37、oursocialmedia feeds,surroundedby peoplewho looklike us and share the same political outlook and neverchallengeourassumptions.Theriseofnakedpartisanship,increasingeconomicandregionalstratification, the splintering of our media into achannel for every taste all this makes this greatsortingseemnatural

38、,eveninevitable.Andincreasingly, we become so secure in our bubbles thatwe accept only information, whether true or not, thatfits our opinions, instead of basing our opinions onthe evidence that s out there.Thistrendrepresentsathirdthreattoourdemocracy.Politicsis a battleof ideas; inthecourseof a he

39、althydebate,we ll prioritizedifferentgoals,and the different means of reaching them. 40、 we ll keep talking past each other,making common ground and compromise impossible.Isn t thatpartofwhatmakespoliticssodispiritingHow can electedofficialsrageaboutdeficits when we propose to spend money on preschoolforkids,butnotwhenwe recuttingtaxesforcorporationsHow do we excuseethicallapsesin our

In justeightyears, we ve halved our dependence on fore

The peril each poses to ourdemocracy is more farreaching than a car bomb
