Nevertheless, even though viewers do not concentrate on television or remember program contents in detail, there is strong evidence that television influences peoples ideas about the world, especially their pe

9、rceptions of distant places and events. The influence of television is particularly strong for young viewers, who rely on it for information about things outside their experience. Many people believe that television fails to provide an accurate or unbiased picture of the world. Some parents and educ

10、ators also fear that children imitate the behavior they see on television and argue that TV does not provide good role models. Television is probably most often criticized for the level of violence it portrays in action-adventure series and in childrens cartoons. Adults worry that watching televisio

11、n will convince children that violence is an acceptable way of solving conflicts. Although many studies have been done on the effects of television violence on childrens behavior, the results are conclusive. Television is also criticized for its explicit sexuality. Up through the 1950s, sexuality wa

12、s absent from television, and even married couples were depicted in separate beds. Things began to change during the 1960s as sexuality became an increasingly prominent feature of television scripts. In the 1980s a family viewing time was established, keeping sex and violence to a minimum before 9:0

13、0 p.m. In the 1990s, however, even family viewing time is filled with sexual innuendo and relatively frank discussion. Television has grown increasingly controversial over the past decade. One response of consumers has been to try to expand their choices though cable system which provides thirty or

14、more channels. Some cable channels specialize in programs for children, educational features and reruns of older programs. Another response has been to turn to video tape. Some parents record unobjectionable programs for their children and replay them. Other parents have eliminated television altoge

15、ther although this response is somewhat rare. If children and adults spend four hours a day in front of a television, there is little doubt that this medium can have a profound effect on American life. 2. The third characteristic of capitalism is that self-interest is important to both the producer and the con

47、sumer. The consumer can choose to spend money on products that will bring the most satisfaction. The consumers self-interest is satisfied if they buy products that work well. Producers can make more money by selling more products; they sell more products if they please their consumers. This principl

48、e is known as consumer sovereignty. In other words consumers have all the power. The fourth characteristic is that, traditionally, the governments role in a free market economy is very small. Competition makes the economy self-regulating, so government intervention is not necessary. In other words,

49、the government does not need to set production standards or quotas. These will be determined by the consumers and their response to the products. The American economy maintained these four characteristics until the Great Depression of the 1930s when capitalism was seriously challenged. President Fra

50、nklin Roosevelt restructured the financial system to remove the worst elements of capitalism. This meant that government began to play a larger role in controlling the economy. The American system since the 1930s has been referred to as mixed capitalism since it combines government supervision with

51、other elements of capitalism such as private ownership and competition. For nearly twenty-five years after World War , the changes put into place during the Roosevelt administration allowed the economy to maintain constant growth with low inflation and a rising standard of living. In the mid-1960s t

52、he economy was again challenged by inflation, unemployment, critical shortages, and rising energy costs. Although the crisis of the 1960s and 1970s was brought under control, stock market crashes in the 1980s brought new challenges as did rising unemployment in the early 1990s. Although it has its d
