Jole ne peeled her eyes off the riveting novel she was absorbed in and looked u

24、p. An old lady was hastening towards her. “Miss! Please save my Anna! She drowning! Please save her! ” pleaded the old lady, urgency evide nt in her voice. Jolene stuffed the novel into her bag hurriedly and sprang to her feet. She gestured for the old lady to lead the way, who then took her down a

25、cobbled pathway that led to the beach. At a glance, the pristine white shore was deserted at such an early hour of the morning. Giving the distraught grandmother a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder, Jolene shed her jacket and kicked off her sandals. Halfway to the waters, Jolene halted in her track

26、s, sudden indecision and uncertainty locking her feet in place. A huge wave that crashed against the shore awakened a fear in her that she had suppressed for years. Looking at Anna drowning before her eyes unreeled a ribbon of painfully vivid memories of an incident that left her bereft of her siste

27、r seven years ago. Jolene had been paddling her canoe vigorously in a furious battle against the turbulent waters of the rapids when her sister Bernice s canoe crashed headlong into a massive boulder in the middle of the river course, capsizing and tipping her over into the waters. Unable to control

28、 her own canoe which was swept onwards by the forceful currents, Jolene had been able to do naught but watch helplessly as her sister thrashed wildly in vain to stay afloat. It was then when an alarming realization struck her: The rapids were going to end in a waterfall! Galvanized into action by mo

29、rbid thoughts of what would happen if she did not get out of the river soon, Jolene had somehow managed to steer her recalcitrant canoe against the battering force of the violent waters and get herself onto the bank. Alas! She had only been able to stare with pulverizing despair as she witnessed Ber

30、nice being swept towards the precipitous drop. The traumatic incident has caused Jolene to suffer from aqua-phobia ever since. Tendrils of fear snaked their way into her body and reached for her chest, the phobia manifesting itself again. Jolene broke out in cold sweat, quavering like an aspen leaf,

31、 as the tendrils closed around her heart. The shattering roar of the waterfall still rang in her ears as she continued to stare blankly at the drowning Anna. Jolene vaguely felt someone tug at her sleeve, but the scene of her sister s death held her thoughts fast, making her unable to respond. She c

32、ould still hear Bernice screaming as her frail form had been hurled downwards in a plunging descent into the churning pool at the foot of the waterfall and swallowed by the frothing waters below. Failure to rescue her sister burned like a fiery brand on her heart, scarring her with the guilt of havi

33、ng let someone dear to her drown. The horrifying event was replaying itself now, with Anna as the protagonist. Jolene shuddered involuntarily. An unusually large wave rolled onto the shore threateningly, startling her to retreat further inland. Jolene could almost feel the waters which had robbed he

34、r of Bernice crashing down on herself, imprisoning her in a watery world. She could feel fear seizing her chest, driving out the air in her lun gs. She was suffocati ng. She desperately n eeded to breathe “Miss! Why are you standing here? My Anna is drowning! She is going to die!” wailed the old lad

35、y as she shock the frozen Jolene vigorously. The hard shaking jolted Jolene out of her stupor, bringing her mind back to the present. She saw Anna disappearing beneath the waters, breaking the surface a moment later, only to be pulled down again. Jolenes initial indecision was expelled, leaving a re

36、solve within to save the girl. She sprinted towards the sea and dived. The shock of icy cold water stunned her momentarily. Instinct and past experience screamed at her to get back on dry land as terror surged anew, but she throttled that fear and pushed it aside determinedly. Jolene was intent on saving the girl. She would not let history repeat itself. She would not fail someone again. Success i
