12、 the dissertation following the Chapters and List of Works Cited.,7. Footnotes / Endnotes,In research papers and dissertations, endnotes are used more often than footnotes. In general, the use of either is discouraged. It used to be common practice to give the full reference of a citation in the fir

13、st footnote, BUT today, short in-text references are preferred (to save space and retain focus).,8. In-Text Citations,Today, the most common way to refer to a bibliographical reference is to make a brief indication in parentheses in the text, such as (Thompson, 2006, p.58) APA, 2006, p.136,In-Text C

14、itations 2 Engineering,Note: Engineering papers and dissertations refer to the bibliographical references by numbers only. The List of Works Cited is ordered alphabetically, but each entry is numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. For example (28, p. 56) in the text refers to entry number 28 in the List of Works

Visual Design,A reports visual design can make or break its communication success Visual Design includes: Headings and subheadings Use of graphs and other graphics Use of white space (OWL Slide 20) Note: APA gives extensive guidelines on incorporating tables (77-96) and figures (97-118),V

List of Works Cited / References,Two major style guides used in the West: APA American Psychological Assn. This presentation has used the

19、2003 edition of the MLA and the 2005 edition of the APA. The APA is the most commonly used style guide for all the sciences. 2. MLA Modern Language Association,APA,The American Psychological Association is the largest scientific and professional organization of psychologists in the United States. It

20、 is the worlds largest association of psychologists with around 152,000 members including scientists, educators, clinicians(临床医师 ), consultants and students. The American Psychological Association is occasionally confused with the American Psychiatric Association, which also uses the acronym APA.,AP

21、A Style,APA Style is a set of rules developed to assist reading comprehension in the social and behavioral sciences. Designed to ensure clarity of communication, the rules are designed to move the idea forward with a minimum of distraction and a maximum of precision.“ The Publication Manual of the A

22、merican Psychological Association contains the rules for every aspect of writing, especially in the social sciences from determining authorship to constructing a table to avoiding plagiarism and constructing accurate reference citations.,MLA,Modern Language Association or MLA is the principal profes

23、sional association in the US for scholars of language and literature. The MLA aims to strengthen the study and teaching of language and literature. It has 30,000 members in 100 countries, primarily academic scholars, professors, and graduate students who study or teach language and literature, inclu
