Within a few years I predict you will be able to buy air. (There once was a time when you didnt need to buy food or shelter either. )Important developments in the last century are the breaking down of the class structures left over from the Industrial Revolution stage, bringing with it the empowerment of the “common man”: the working day is set by law to only 8 hours a day; everyone has the vote; the media has less obvious government control; people have landed on the moon, sent spacecrafts to Mars and so on. Families have also shrunk drastically(强烈的); the nuclear family came about, and especially in the last half of the 20th century, oneparent families are becoming more common. This shrinking in the size of the family shows the increased independence of peopleonce upon a time people had to live in large groups to survive. As humans have “become the gods”, they have realized their individuality and independence and taken their control of the world to an extreme. In many countries the land is almost completely used in the production of food and as living space and they live in small cities which are entirely human constructed, made from materials which are also entirely human constructed (concrete bricks) with hardly any remains of nature.Weeds are poisoned because they are messy; even parks have trees grown in tidy lines; grass is mowed to keep it short and so on. I think the massive drug “problem” troubling people is a result of too much of this influence, humans needing to escape the stark world they have created by entering fantasy worlds.Over the last 100 years, the 20th century consciousness has spread throughout the world; most of Asia has been thoroughly “Westernized”,and most of the Third World is being overrun by Western ways of doing things and living. 1Whats the author most concerned about?AThe influence of pollution.BStrong effects of development.CChanged positions of humans as gods.DThe process of the Industrial Revolution. B2What is the authors attitude towards the changes of the 20th century?AObjective. BTolerant.CVague. DNegative. D3What does the underlined word “stark” in Paragraph 3 mean?AUnfair. BIllegal.CDull. DViolent. C4What can be inferred from the passage?AMens individuality is over controlled.BPeople have damaged nature too much.CMens independence is partially limited.DPeople show concern for nuclear families. 答案:BB(2012石家庄高中毕业班教学质检)Eating Out with KidsWhen you go out to dine with kids, you need to know the places where kids are not only welcomed, but really catered for (满足的要求)Now were listed some of the best familyfriendly restaurants and cafes.MUMU GrillIt offers the perfect family dinner. A new report says that weak social ties may be to blame for the higher incidence of mental disorders in cities. Its not the busy life in cities surrounded by people that makes city dwellers mentally unstable. In fact, its the opposite. Cities packed with people can actually make people feel disconnected and socially isolated.Dr Stanley Zammit of Cardiff University in Wales led the study published in Archives of General Psychiatry, where the goal of the research was to determine whether individual, school or area characteristics had a specific link to psychosis(精神病). Living in a city was associated with a 41 percent higher chance of psychosis compared to rural living. However, the lifetime risk of schizophrenia (精神分裂症) is about 1 percent, so the lifetime risk of living in a city and getting the disease might rise to about 1.5 percent, which isnt a huge difference. The team gathered data from more than 200,000 people living in Sweden. Those individuals were all born between 1972 and 1977. The scientists analyzed diagnoses of schizophrenia and other psychoses recorded in Swedens national health registry (档案室) up until 2003.The team analyzed multiple variables (可变因素) related to the individuals, including the schools they attended and the neighbourhoods they lived in. Out of all the variables examined, a weak social connection at the school level was the most significant. This finding turned up in the proportion of kids who were immigrants, who changed cities between ages 8 and 16 or who were raised in a singleparent home.Limits of the study included a lack of data on potentially important variables such as drug use. Additionally, the researchers noted an inherent difficulty in adequately measuring neighbourhood or arealevel social fragmentation.Invite a few friends
