山西壶关县2017高考英语一轮阅读理解选练(一)阅读理解。阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions, Jack said. Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth. According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions, Jack said. Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less. In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.( ) 1. The discovery shows that Westerners . On seeing those in rags on the corner, I only wanted the light to turn green fast enough so that I wouldnt have to keep pretending not to see them. Then, one day, as I was holding the hand of my best friend Jane who was young but dying of breast cancer, she told me that she made every moment count by slowing down and by seeing everything . I held her hand for five years and then she passed away. She did teach me something. It took a while for her words to really sink in. I can be a slow learner. I started by seeing everything, and focused on their presence. One day I saw a Vietnam veteran(老兵). I asked him what would make his day. A hot cup of coffee, he told me. I bought him a cup of coffee, a stack of pancakes, some eggs, and so on. After our meal together, I asked him if there was anything else that would make his life a bit easier. A new pair of socks, he said. Socks, really? I actually happened to be wearing a nice pair of wool hiking socks at that very moment. I told him that I wanted to give him the pair I was wearing if he would accept it. Finally he agreed. We sat down on a bench, and he started to first take off his boots, and then remove the black socks that had once been white off his feet. I think a layer or two of skin might have come off with them. Taking his new pair of socks, he held the socks up to his cheeks and said they were warm and smelled as good as me, pools of tears in his eyes. Such a simple luxury (奢侈品) I used to take for granted. Now I always have an extra pair with me in my car. They are always my best pair, just waiting to be given away.1. On seeing the homeless, the author used to_. They are trying to develop an environmentally friendly refrigerator that runs without electricity. We all know that modern fridges cause damage to the environment. They work by using a kind of man-made greenhouse gas called Freon (氟里昂), which is far more damaging than carbon dioxide. Now Malcolm McCulloch, an electrical engineer at Oxford, is leading a three-year project to develop appliances that can be used in places without electricity. His team has completed a prototype (样机) of a fridge patented in 1930 by Einstein. It used only pressurized gases to keep things cold. The design was partly used in the first refrigerators, but the technology was dropped when more efficient compressors (压缩机) became popular in the 1950s. That meant a switch to using Freon.Einsteins idea uses butane (丁烷) and water and takes advantage of the fact that liquids boil at lower temperatures, when the air pressure around them is lower. If you go to the top of Mount Qomolangma, water boils at a much lower temperature than it does when youre at sea level and thats because the pressure is much lower up there, said McCulloch. At one side is the evaporator (蒸发器), a bottle that contains liquid butane. If you introduce a new vapor above the butane, the liquid boiling temperature decreases and, as it boils off, it takes energy from the surroundings to do so, says McCulloch. Thats what makes it cold. The gas fridges based on Einsteins design were replaced by Freon-compressor fridges partly because Einsteins design was not very efficient. But McCulloch thinks that by changing the design and replacing the types of gases used it will be possible to quadruple (翻两番) the efficiency. However, McCullochs fridge is still in its early stages. Its very much a prototype, he said. Give us another month and well have it working.72According to the passage, an early invention by Albert Einstein _.Ahas been rediscovered because it costs much less and works more efficientlyBis being redesigned because it could be used in places without electricityChas just been found to be energy-saving and environmentally friendlyDwill be fully made use of and become the fridge of the future73Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?AFreon was used in fridges long before the 1950s.BFreon is what makes current fridges big polluters.CMcCulloch thinks he could improve Einsteins design by using other types of vapors.DThe fridge Malcolm McCulloch and his team designed will be put into production soon.74We can learn from the text that the prototype completed _.Achanged the air pressure around itBwas tested on the top of Mount EverestCincreased the liquid boiling temperatureDused only pressurized gases to keep things cold75McCullochs words in Paragraph 6 _.Aserve as an explanation for the principle behind Einsteins fridgeBgive you the reason why Einsteins fridge was not efficientCtell you how to take advantage of low air pressureDshow you how Einsteins fridge works【参考答案】7275、BBDA阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。【四川省绵阳市2014高考英语一模试题】ASometimes people call each other scared-cat, but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream. Although the cat doesnt realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will defend itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger-or hit somebody-and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isnt always wise to express your feelings freely.Does this mean that its smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illness can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health. (It isnt good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.)Feeling that you keep all bottles up inside, dont just go away. Its as if bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long youd smell them, if you opened the cupboard, chances are youd see little fruit flies hovering all over them. Theyd be rotten. You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they dont exist, but theyll still be around. And at last youll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.56. What does the word emotions in the second paragraph mean?A. acts B. feelings C. measurements D. thinking57. The best title for this article is _.A. Emotions Affect Our BodiesB. What Happens to A Frightened CatC. What Happens to An Excited PersonD. Feelings That People Have58. The author wrote this article in order to _.A. tell us that it isnt good to keep feelings insideB. give us some advice on how to express our feelingsC. compare man with a scared cat and suggest mankind learn from it.D. make us know that it isnt always wise to express our feelings freely【参考答案】5658、BAB 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。【四川省绵阳市2014高考英语一模试题】Increasing Noise AnnoysPeople want action on noise, a recent public meeting in Brisbane showed. Some want technical improvements such as quieter air conditioners or better sound barriers around major roads. Others want tougher laws to restrict noise from building sites or to require owners to take responsibility for barking dogs. But the highest priority (优先) was a noise complaints system that works.Brisbane City Council receives more complaints about noise than all other problems put together. So it conducted survey and found that about half its citizens are upset by noise in one form or another-traffic, mowers, pool pumps, air conditioners or loud parties. This inspired the Council to bring together more than 100 citizens one evening to talk through solutions to the problem. The meeting found the present noise complaints system bizarre. Depending on the problem, responsibility for noise can lie with the Council, the Environment Protection Authority, one of three government departments or even the police. So complaints often feel they are getting the run-round. When the people at the meeting were asked to vote for changes, the strongest
