Yohannes walks beside a pair of donkeys that are pulling a two-wheeled cart. They arrive at the agricultural town of Awassa where Yohannes opens the sides of the cart to display, not the usual vegetables or tools, but childrens books. This is the Donkey Mobile Library, the first of its kind in Ethiopia and one of only a few in the world. Yohannes was born in Ethiopia, North Africa, but trained to be a librarian in the USA and returned to Ethiopia years ago. The cart is full of picture books donated by American libraries, teachers and school children. Yohannes arranges small painted benches in the shade of the trees, and suddenly Ethiopian children come shouting and racing down every road and path. Its mobile library day! They circle the bookshelves with great excitement. Until the Donkey Mobile Library began its regular two-monthly visits, many of these children had never seen a book. “Without books, education is very dull, like food without salt. You can survive but you cant really come alive,” says Yohannes. “The ability to read is the basis for greater productivity, better health and longer life. Even though the children lack material goods, with books they can imagine a world of possibilities.” Yohannes first worked in the childrens section of the main library in America. Surrounded by books he had never seen before, he realized how joyful and imaginative childrens literature is. He says, “I always thought of Ethiopia. But how could I bring childrens books to my home country when it had almost no libraries to keep the books in?” He contacted Jane Kurtz, a writer born in America but brought up in Ethiopia, and together they created the Donkey Mobile Library. The children say that the Library has given them ideas about what they might do in the future. A child called Dareje wants to be a scientist and find a cure for life-threatening diseases. An eleven year-old girl, Fikerte, wants to do research about the moon and discover new facts about outer space. Tamrat, aged 10, comes every time. “What brings you back here time and time again?” the librarian asks him. “The stories,” Tamrat replies instantly. 31.How do the children feel when they see the Donkey Mobile Library? Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air.One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal (愈合). Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is important to make the area, which has been pruned, smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the materials available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference (妨碍) from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.39. Why should pruning be done?A. To make the tree grow taller. B. To improve the shape of the tree.C. To get rid of the small branches. D. To make the small branches thicker.40. Trees become unhealthy if the gardener _. .A. helps a wound to dry.B. covers a rough surface.C. damages some of the small side branches.D. allows too many branches to grow in the middle. 41. Why is a special material painted on the tree?A. To help a wound to dry. B. To cover a rough surface.C. To prevent disease entering a wound.D. To make a wound smooth.42. The writer wrote this passage_A. to introduce some common knowledge of pruning.B. to discuss different methods of pruning.C. to explain how trees develop disease.D. to give practical instruction for pruning a tree.DPeople born in the winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning(断奶) in either “summer” light cycles of 16 hours of light and eight hours of dark or “winter” cycles of eight hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day,Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12-hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer subset. After 28 days, it turns out the summer-born mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winter-born mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks. The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in the winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder.“We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans,” said study researcher McMahon. “If an imprinting mechanism(运行机制)similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality.”43. How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment? A. four B. five C. six D. seven44. Whats the main idea of the text?A. The biological clock regulates mood in humans. B. people born in the winter are at higher risk for physical health disorders. C. Being born in the winter has a negative effect on peoples mental health. D. The length of light will influence the behavior of the mice.45. The underlined word split can be replaced by ? (Line 2, Paragraph3)A. divided B. torn C. hit D. ended46. Which group of mice has changed their behavior after the experiment?A. The group born in the winter and staying in the winter. B. The group born in the winter and switching to the summer.C. The group born in the summer and staying in the summer. D. The group born in the summer and switching to the winter.47. Who is the appropriate reader of the passage? A. a job hunter B. a student in the university C. a newly-married couple D. an experienced dentistE“Hey, Jenna, do you think well still be friends when were eighty-two?” I asked my friend. It was clear that she was wondering where I had come up with such a question. Losing Jenna would be like losing a very close sister. We hung out together. We gave each other advice. “Of course, well still be friends when were eighty-two.” Jenna announced loudly. The next year, in the fourth grade, we met Jamie. The three of us soon became close friends. Before Christmas, we had a really big fight, and Jamie and Jenna were against me, both saying
