第一单元/cet6/201012/120741_4.shtmlLet us suppose that you are in the position of a parent. Would you allow your children to read any book they wanted to without first checking its contents? Would you take your children to see any film without first finding out whether it is suitable for them? If your answer to these questions is yes, then you are either extremely permissive. If your answer is no, then you are exercising your right as a parent to protect your children from what you consider to be undesirable influences. In other words, by acting as a censor yourself, you are admitting that there is a strong case for censorship. Now, of course, you will say that it is one thing to exercise censorship where children are concerned and quite another to do the same for adults. Children need protection and it is the parents responsibility to provide it. But what about adults? Arent they old enough to decide what is good for them? The answer is that many adults are, but dont make the mistake of thinking that all adults are like you. Censorship is for the good of society as a whole. Like the law, censorship contributes to the common good. Some people think that it is disgraceful that a censor should interfere with works of art. Who is this person, they say, to ban this great book or cut that great film? No one can set himself up as a superior being. But we must remember two things. Firstly, where genuine works of art are concerned, modern censors are extremely liberal in their viewsoften far more liberal than a large section of the public. Artistic merit is something which censors clearly recognize. And secondly, we must bear in mind that the great proportion of books, plays and films which come before the censor are very far from being works of art. When discussing censorship, therefore, we should not confine our attention to great masterpieces, but should consider the vast numbers of publications and films which make up the bulk of the entertainment industry. When censorship laws are relaxed, immoral people are given a license to produce virtually anything in the name of art. There is an increasing tendency to equate artistic with pornographic. The vast market for pornography would rapidly be exploited. One of the great things that censorship does is to prevent certain people from making fat profits by corrupting the minds of others. To argue in favor of absolute freedom is to argue in favor of anarchy.Society would really be the poorer if it deprived itself of the wise counsel and the restraining influence which a censor provides.57. Permissive parents would _.A let their children read any books they like toB not let their children see any films they like toC not let their children read any books without first checking their contentsD let their children see the films with their first checking58. The fact that parents check the contents of the book or the film for their children to read or see shows _.A the necessity of censorshipB many books and films are badC children need their parents to help them understand moreD the parents are permissive59. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A Some adults cant tell right from wrong.B Censorship is compared to the law because both of them perform good service to society as a whole.C Censors pay attention only to genuine works of art.D Censorship is necessary because many books, plays and films are far from being “works of art”.60. What does the word “corrupt” (Line 5, Para 4) mean?A Make morally bad. B Hurt. C Injure. D Damage.61. What would be the best title of this passage?A Permissive Parents and Responsible Parents.B Censorship and the law.C Censors Value Artistic Merits.D Censorship Performs Good Service to Society. /zzy/news/555336.shtmlEach summer, no matter how pressing my work schedule, I take off one day exclusively for my son. We call it dad-son day. This year our third stop was the amusement park, where be discovered that he was tall enough to ride one of the fastest roller coasters (过山车) in the world. We blasted through face-stretching turns and loops for ninety seconds. Then, as we stepped off the ride, be shrugged and, in a distressingly calm voice, remarked that it was not as exciting as other rides hed been on. As I listened, I began to sense something seriously out of balance.Throughout the season, I noticed similar events all around me. Parents seemed hard pressed to find new thrills for indifferent kids. Surrounded by ever-greater stimulation, their young faces were looking disappointed and bored.Facing their childrens complaints of “nothing to do“, parents were shelling out large numbers of dollars for various forms of entertainment. In many cases the money seemed to do little more than buy transient relief from the terrible moans of their bored children. This set me pondering the obvious question:“ How can it be so hard for kids to find something to do when theres never been such a range of stimulating entertainment available to them?”What really worries me is the intensity of the stimulation. I watch my little daughters face as she absorbs the powerful onslaught (冲击) of arousing visuals and bloody special effects in movies. Why do children immersed in this much excitement seem starved for more? That was, I realized, the point. I discovered during my own reckless adolescence that what creates excitement is not going fast, but going faster. Thrills have less to do with speed than changes in speed.Im concerned about the cumulative effect of years at these levels of feverish activity. It is no mystery to me why many teenagers appear apathetic (麻木的) and burned out, with a “been there, done that” air of indifference toward much of life. As increasing numbers of friends children are prescribed medications-stimulants to deal with inattentiveness at school or anti-depressants to help with the loss of interest and joy in their lives-I question the role of kids boredom in some of the diagnoses. My own work is focused on the chemical imbalances and biological factors related to behavioral and emotional disorders. These are complex problems. Yet Ive been reflecting more and more on how the pace of life and the intensity of stimulation may be contributing to the rising rates of psychiatric problems among children and adolescents in our society.1. The author tell surprised in the amusement park at fact that _.A) his son was not as thrilled by the roller coasters ride as expectedB) his son blasted through the turns and loops with his face stretchedC) his son appeared distressed but calm while riding the roller coastersD) his son could keep his balance so well on the fast moving roller coasters2. According to the author, children are bored _.A) unless their parents can find new thrills for themB) when they dont have any access to stimulating fun gamesC) when they are left alone at weekends by their working parentsD) even if they are exposed to more and more kinds of entertainment3. From his own experience, the author came to the conclusion that children seem to expect _.A) a much wider variety of sports facilitiesB) activities that require sophisticated skillsC) ever-changing thrilling forms of recreationD) physical exercises that are more challenging4. In Para 6 the author expresses his doubt about the effectiveness of trying to change childrens indifference toward much of life by _.A) diverting their interest from electronic visual gamesB) prescribing medications for their temporary reliefC) creating more stimulating activities for themD) spending more money on their entertainment5. In order to alleviate childrens boredom, the author would probably suggest _.A) adjusting the pace of life and intensity of stimulationB) promoting the practice of dad-son daysC) consulting a specialist in child psychologyD) balancing school work with extracurricular activities每年夏天,无论多么紧迫的工作时间表,我脱下一天专门为我的儿子。 一)调整生活的节奏和强度的刺激B)促进dad-son天的实践C)儿童心理学专家咨询D)平衡和课外活动的学校工作第二单元/_English_254_26_ENG00012912_show.shtmlQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: Imagine a world in which there was suddenly no emotion-a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate. Try to imagine the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and support. Human relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds among members of groups. Societys economic underpinnings (支柱) would be destroyed: since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive to work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind. For as we will see, incentives imply a capacity to enjoy them. In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instrument of our survival and adaptation. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotions. True we consider the length, shape, size, or texture, but an objects physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us-hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyful. We al so use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, communities, and overall society. Out of our emotional experiences with objects and events comes a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are“good”and others are“bad”, and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life-from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society exploits our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty morality, pride shame, guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itself It gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war, and uses the legal penal (刑法的) system to make people afraid to engage in antisocial acts31.The reason why people might not be able to stay alive in a world without emotion is that _ . (A)they would not be able to tell the texture of objects.(B)they would not know what was beneficial and what was harmful to them.(C)they would not be happy with a life without love.(D)they would do things that hurt each others feelings.2 : 32.According to the passage, peoples learning activities are possible because they_ .(A)believe that emotions are fundamental for them to stay alive.(B)benefit from providing help and support to one another.(C)enjoy being rewarded for doing the right thing.(D)know what is vital to the progress of society.3 : 33.It can be inferred from the passage that the economic foundation of society is dependent on _.(A)the ability to make money.(B)the will to work for pleasure.(C)the capacity to enjoy incentives.(D)the categorizations of our emotional experiences4 : 34.Emotions are significant for mans survival and adaptation because _.(A)they provide the means by which people view the size or shape of objects.(B)they are the basis for the social feeling of agreement by which society is maintained.(C)they encourage people to perform dangerous achievements.(D)they generate more love than hate among people.5 : 35.The emotional aspects of an object are more important than its physical aspects in that they_ .(A)help society exploit its members for profit.(B)encourage us to perform important tasks.(C)help to perfect the legal and penal system.(D)help us adapt our behavior to the world surrounding us想象在一个世界里,有突然没有情感冲突的世界中,人类就觉得没有爱和幸福,没有恐怖或恨。 Questioned Educational Function of TVChildren learn almost nothing from television, and the more they watch the less they remember. They regard television purely as entertainment, resent programs that demand on them and are surprised that anybody should take the medium seriously. Far from being over-excited by programs, they are mildly bored with the whole thing. These are the main conclusions from a new study of children and television. The author- Cardiac Cullingford confirms that the modern child is a dedicated viewer. The study suggests that there is little point in the later hours. More than a third of the children regularly watch their favorite programs after 9 p.m. all 11-year-olds have watched programs after midnight.Apart from the obvious waste of time involved, it seems that all this viewing has little effect. Children dont pay close attention, says Cullingford, and they can recall few details. They can remember exactly which programs they have seen but they can rarely explain the elements of a particular plot. Recall was in reverse proportion to the amount they had watched. It is precisely because television, unlike a teacher, demands so little attention and response that children like it, argues Cullingford. Programs seeking to put over serious messages are strongly disliked. So are people who frequently talk on screen. What children like most, and remember best, are the advertisements. They see them as short programs in their own right and particularly enjoy humorous presentation. But again, they react strongly against high-pressure advertisements that attempt openly to influence them. On the other hand, they are not emotionally involved in the programs. If they admire the stars, it is b
