Teaching planBackground information : 1) Students : 45 junior high school students, grade 9, the first semester2) Lesson duration : 35 minutes3) Time and date : 8:00-8:35 Tuesday,April 20th, 20104) Material : Go For It, Unit 11 : Could You Please Tell Me Where the Restrooms Are ? section A5) Teaching progress : the first lesson Teaching objectives :By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:1. knowledge objectives 1) Be more familiar with words or phrases about locations and about giving directions; 2) Master the structure of asking the way politely: where A is? the way to A? Excuse me, could you please tell me how I can get to A? which is the way to A? how to get to A?2. Skill Objective1) Be more familiar with giving directions correctly;2) Ask and give the way politely in daily life;3. Emotional objectives 1) Be polite when asking for information in our daily life wherever it is, in China or in foreign countries; 2) Be polite whatever occasion it is; 3) Be brave and confident to ask and answer questions in class.Teaching contentThe structure of asking the way politely : Excuse me, could you please tell meStudents prior knowledge Students have learned how to describe the location of a place and how to give directions.Teaching aids: blackboard, chalk, picturesTypes of lesson : speaking , (grammar)Teaching procedureStep 1: Review how to give directions (5 mins)a) Before starting the class, the teacher draws a picture with many places in it.b) The teacher asks two pairs of students good at English to come to the front of the classroom. While one student from each pair gives directions by pointing at the picture to show the way, the other student writes down the words and phrases relevant to giving directions according to what she/he hears. (2 mins)c) The teacher asks all the students to make some compliments of words and phrases about locations and writes them down. Then the teacher guides the students to read words and phrases out together to get more familiar with them. (1 mins)d) The teacher asks the whole class to give the ways to another two places in the picture drawn on the blackboard. (2 mins)Step 2: Lead in with questions about the world expositon to be held in shanghai from May 1st to October 1st. (6 mins)Questions: 1、(to the whole class) Have you ever been to shanghai before? Do you know that the world exposition will be held in shanghai on May 1st ? (1 mins)2、If you have the chance to go to shanghai and visit the world exposition, which exposition hall do you want to visit most? (Students can give some simple reasons.) (ask three students) (2 mins)3、Do you know the way ? If you dont know, what will you do ? Will you ask the way politely? And How?(ask two students) (2 mins)While the students are answering the third question, the teacher writes down their answers to how they will ask the way on the blackboard.4、The teacher makes some compliments to the students answers and read them twice and the students follows. (1 mins)Step3: practice asking the way politely 1、Pair work (4 mins) a)The teacher gives papers with 2 pictures to all the students and asks them to practice in pairs politely to any place in the first picture and make a short dialogue. They can use any way written down on the blackboard. (2 mins) b) The teacher asks 2 pairs to show their dialogue. (2 mins) If the students make some small mistakes, the teacher should make some correction .2、A competitive activity (10 mins)The whole class are divided into group A and group Ba) The teacher names 6 places in the second picture on the paper given to students at the activity of pair work . The six places are: sport musium、movie theater 、restaurant 、tea shop、 post office、 E-shines( a big companys name).b) the teacher explains the rules of the activity: one student from group A asks the way to any place named by the teacher and another student from group B volunteer to give the directions. After finishing giving the directions, he will in turn ask the way to a place which begins with the last letter of the place mentioned by the previous student. Then another student from group A volunteer to give the way. The activity continues like this until all the six named places have been asked. The two groups compete with each other to see who is faster to respond to the questions advanced by their opponents. (2 mins)c) The teacher sets an example with one student who is good at English.(1 mins)d) The students get familiar with the locations of the six places.(1 mins)e) Carry out the competitive activity . (5 mins)f) After the activity, the teacher makes some comments on what have been well-done and what needs to be improved of each group so as to make it a win-win activity . (1 mins)3、An activity named “ Simulated training room” for more practice . (7 mins)a) the teacher gives 7 papers with seven names of halls of the World Expo to 7 students at different places in the classroom. The classroom is imagined to be the scene of the World Expo. The students who are given the papers are required to stand up and hold high her paper when someone wants to get to the hall she stands for. (1mins)b)The teacher sets an example with one student doing well in English . (2 mins)(T: excuse me, I am a visitor here ,could you please tell me the way to Henan Hall? S: sure ) c) The teacher asks two pairs of students to ask the way politely and give directions in the classroom just as the teacher and the student demonstrated.
