Some people can lead other people by the nose. For example, if a wife leads her husband by the nose, she makes him do whatever she wants him to do. Some people are said to be hard-nosed. They will not change their opinions or positions on anything. If someone is hard-nosed, he will never pay through the nose, or pay too much money, for an object or service. It is always helpful when people keep their nose out of other peoples business. They do not interfere. The opposite of this is someone who noses around all the time. This kind of person is interested in other peoples private matters. He is considered nosey. More problems can develop if a person looks down his nose at someone or something. The person acts like something is unimportant or worthless. This person might also turn up his nose at something that he considers not good enough. This person thinks he is better than everyone else. He has his nose in the air. In school, some students thumb their nose at their teacher. They refuse to obey orders or do any work. Maybe these students do not know the correct answers. My mother always told me, if you study hard, the answers should be right under your nose or easily seen. I think we have explained the nose expressions. What about ears? Well, I hope you are all ears or very interested in hearing more expressions. We might even put a bug in your ear or give you an idea about something. We also advise you to keep your ear to the ground. This means to be interested in what is happening around you and what people are thinking. If you are a good person, you will lend an ear to your friends. You will listen to them when they have a problem they need to talk about. 41. The passage mainly wants to tell us _. If we say a man paid through the nose, we mean _. A. nose around all the time B. keep his nose out of other peoples things C. turn up his nose at others D. keep his ear to the ground 44. BThe purpose of professional networking is to gain information, increase your visibility in your field, and establish personal connections that will help you advance in your career. No matter how much you love your job, you should always be looking for ways to expand your networks because, ideally, your contacts will follow you from position to position. A strong network allows you to get advice form trusted sources, to keep your professional knowledge current, to find career opportunities, and to support the careers of others. Here are some tips for you to expand your professional network:1. Look for contacts everywhereYour network should have lots of variety; individuals from different companies, career levels, and professions can add a range of perspectives. Keeping in touch with your college friends who might be in different companies is a great way to expand your network. Joining a professional association in your field and regularly attending its events is also a smart idea. Finally, taking part in some training events or various types of interest-based events can produce the same type of contacts. 2. Be strategic Before going to an event, think about what you hope to get out of attending. Understand who the speakers will be at the event and how you might contact them or access their materials in advance of or after the event. Also, prepare a few questions that you want to explore, and find someone at the event with that type of expertise. 3. Be personable Many experts are willing to speak and share their knowledge, but some may not be as willing. Dont feel dejected. It may take a few attempts to make a personal connection. 4. _If your contact gives you any advice or suggests a course of action, pay a visit or make a call every few months with an update on your progress. And since effective networking always involves giving and taking, think about ways you can help your contact in return. 46.
