2014高考英语阅读理解精英训练精品题(14)及答案passage twenty-eight (chemistry and biology)about a century ago, the swedish physical scientist arrhenius proposed a low of classical chemistry that relates chemical reaction rate to temperature. according to his equation, chemical reactions are increasingly unlikely to occur as temperature approaches absolute zero, and at absolute zero, reactions stop. however, recent experiment evidence reveals that although the arrhenius equation is generally accurate in describing the kind of chemical reaction that occurs at relatively high temperature, at temperatures closer to zero a quantum-mechanical effect known as tunneling comes into play; this effect accounts for chemical reactions that are forbidden by the principles of classical chemistry. specifically, entire molecules can tunnel through the barriers of repulsive forces from other molecules and chemically react even though these molecules do not have sufficient energy, according to classical chemistry, to overcome the repulsive barrier.the rate of any chemical reaction, regardless of the temperature at which it takes place, usually depends on a very important characteristic known as its activation energy. any molecule can be imagined to reside at the bottom of a so-called potential well of energy. s chemical reaction corresponds to the transition of a molecule from the bottom of one potential well to the bottom of another. in classical chemistry, such a transition can be accomplished only by going over the potential barrier between the well, the height of which remain constant and is called the activation energy of the reaction. in tunneling, the reacting molecules tunnel from the bottom of one to the bottom of another well without having to rise over the barrier between the two wells. recently researchers have developed the concept of tunneling temperature: the temperature below which tunneling transitions greatly outnumber arrhenius transitions, and classical mechanics gives way to its quantum counterpart.this tunneling phenomenon at very low temperatures suggested my hypothesis about a cold prehistory of life: formation of rather complex organic molecules in the deep cold of outer space, where temperatures usually reach only a few degrees kelvin. cosmic rays might trigger the synthesis of simple molecules, such as interstellar formaldehyde, in dark clouds of interstellar dust. afterward complex organic molecules would be formed, slowly but surely, by means of tunneling. after i offered my hupothesis, hoyle and wickramashinghe argued that molecules of interstellar formaldehyde have indeed evolved into stable polysaccharides such as cellulose and starch. their conclusions, although strongly disputed, have generated excitement among investigators such as myself who are proposing that the galactic clouds are the places where the prebiological evolution of compounds necessary to life occurred.1. the author is mainly concerned with a. describing how the principles of classical chemistry were developed. initiating a debate about the kinds of chemical reaction required for the development of life.c. explaining how current research in chemistry may be related to broader biological concerns.d. clarifying inherent ambiguities in the laws of classical chemistry.2. in which of the following ways are the mentioned chemical reactions and tunneling reactions alike?a. in both, reacting molecules have to rise over the barrier between the two wells. in both types of reactions, a transition is made from the bottom of one potential well to the bottom of another.c. in both types of reactions, reacting molecules are able to go through the barrier between the two wells.d. in neither type of reaction does the rate of a chemical reaction depend on its activation energy.3. the authors attitude toward the theory of a cold prehistory of life can best be described asa. neutral. . skeptical.c. mildly positive. d. very supportive.4. which of the following best describes the hypothesis of hoyle and wickramasinghe?a. molecules of interstellar formaldehyde can evolve into complex organic molecules. interstellar formaldehyde can be synthesized by tunneling.c. cosmic rays can directly synthesize complex organic molecules.d. the galactic clouds are the places where prebilogical evolution of compounds necessary to life occurred.vocabulary1. a. a. a. b. d. 4. a. 阅读理解-bas an experienced photojournalist in nashville, tennessee, i was hired by usa today newspaper to photograph a spinal bifida (脊柱畸形) corrective surgical procedure. it was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus(胎儿)in uterus(子宫)at vanderbilt university medical center. at that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in uterus was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. the worst possible outcome would be that the surgery would cause premature delivery, and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived. the tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began. a typical c-section incision (切口) was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mothers thighs(大腿). the entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. during the procedure, the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently manipulating(熟练操作) the outside of the uterus. the entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in one hour and thirteen minutes. when it was over, the surgical team breathed a sigh of relief, as did i. as a doctor asked me what speed of film i was using, out of the corner of my eye i saw the uterus shake, but no ones hands were near it. it was shaking from within. suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. the doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctors finger. as if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. samuel held firm. i took the picture! wow! it happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, “what happened?” “the child reached out,” i said. “oh. they do that all the time,” she responded. the surgical opening to the uterus was closed and the uterus was then put back into the mother and the c-section opening was closed.it was ten days before i knew if the picture was even in focus. to ensure no digital manipulation of images before they see them, usa today requires that film be submitted(提交) unprocessed. when the photo editor finally phoned me he said, “its the most incredible picture ive ever seen.”46. in 1999, people believed that it was _.a. possible for a fetus 21 weeks born to survive b. likely for a fetus born 21 weeks to become deformed (畸形的)c. right time for a fetus born 21 weeks to receive an operationd. risky for a fetus 21 weeks in uterus to receive an operation47. from the second paragraph, we can see that the surgery was _.a. challenging but successfulb. demanding and unsuccessful c. simple and shortd. long-lasting and difficult 48. the underlined “it” in paragraph 3 refers to _.a. the shaking of the uterusb. the arm of the fetus c. the taking of the pictured. the head of the fetus49. from the editor said in the last paragraph, we know the photo editor was very _.a. disappointedb. satisfiedc. annoyedd. depressed【参考答案】46-49 dacb 阅读理解-cbeijingapple inc is one step closer to beginning sales of ipad2 tablet computers with cellular (手机) network compatibility (兼容) for the first time in the chinese mainland, where the consumer-electronics giant is in the midst of an aggressive expansion. according to chinas telecommunication equipment certification center, a device by apple with third-generation high-speed wireless data capabilities was issued the network access license needed for the company to begin official sales in china. the device, listed under model number “a1396”, is compatible(相容的) with the 3g standard wcdma, and would work with the cellular network operated by apples local iphone partner, china unicom (hong kong) ltd.china unicom declined (谢绝) to comment.apple already offers the 3g ipad2 in hong kong through its partners, but currently only offers wi-fi versions of the device in the chinese mainland. still, consumers in china, which according to research firm idc surpassed (超过) the us as the worlds largest pc market in the second quarter, have been purchasing 3g tablets through unofficial channels. separately, apple spokeswoman carolyn wu said sept 6 that the companys first hong kong store, set to open this quarter, will be located in the citys central shopping and business district in the international finance centers upscale (高档的) ifc mall, a commercial center and sightseeing spot along the citys waterfront. wu also said that apple is planning a new store in shanghai later this quarter, which will be its biggest store in china. she declined to give more details or to comment on the 3g ipad2.apple currently has four full-service apple stores in the mainland, which receive the most traffic of any apple stores in the world. the company otherwise relies on resellers to get its products into the market. the new stores reflect apples confidence in rising demand for its products such as smart phones and tablet computers. sales in the chinese mainland, hong kong and taiwan helped boost (增长) the companys third-quarter results, newly appointed chief executive tim cook said in july. china revenue (收益) surged (激增) six-fold to about $3.8 billion during the three months ended j
