Every day when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss. “Leave that job,” her husband told her.“Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. I have too many friends there for me to leave.” And so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children. “Leave that job,” her grandchildren told her. “Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. There are only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I cant just yet.” I know this woman. And her story reminds me of an old dog half asleep on the porch of a general store, moaning and groaning in the sun. “Why is your dog acting that way?” a customer asked the store owner. “Oh,” answered the man. “Hes lying on a nail.” “Well, why doesnt he move?” “Because its not hurting him bad enough.”Thats true for people, too. We convince ourselves the pain is not bad enough to leave the workplace we know. But were wrong. Prolonged work pain is continuing. Some work pain damages our self-esteem, kills our passion or destroys our dreams.Wilbur Wright oncemented, “We could hardly wait to get up in the morning. I know that exhilarating feeling of being so passionate about something I was working on that I couldnt wait to get back to work. And people who are winning at working know that kind of passion, too.”They get excited about work. They offer their unique gifts and talents eagerly. Gifts are easy theyre given after all. Choices can be hard.I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. Id never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and Id been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldnt work since most start-ups dont, and I wasnt sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, Id been a garage inventor. Id always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a pany selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didnt already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didnt think Id regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and Im proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.25. What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?A. His dream of being an inventor. B. The support of his wife.C. We Are What We ChooseCDo you ever wonder why the English have one word for some animals and a different one for their meat? Why do they use pig and pork, cow and beef, and sheep and mutton. To find out, we have to go back to 1066. In that year, the Norman French invaded England and put a French king on the English throne. The French not only changed the government but they also changed the language. French became the language of the upper classes of society. And it remained that way for 300 years. Only these high society people could afford to eat meat. As a result, French words like porc (pork) and beouf (beef) came into the English language. However, poor English farmers raised the animals. So, the English language retained the words pig and cow from the native Anglo-Saxon. The Norman French added about 10,000 French words to the English language. Seventy-five percent of them are still in use to day. Language experts estimate that English speakers who have never studied French already know 15,000 French words! Between one-third and two-thirds of all English words have French origin. Some words suchas possible and avenue are the same in French and English; only the pronunciation changes. Other words such as ballet or a la carte retain their French pronunciation in both languages. In French grammar, nouns have either a male or female gender, so adjectives(形容词) take different forms for each. English has only one adjective that does this, and it came from French. The word blond describes someone with light-colored hair. Blond is used for men, and blonde describes women. And they are also nouns. Some French words that entered the English language have taken on pletely different meanings. The French phrase a la mode means “in style.” In English, the phrase means “with ice cream.” Someone must have decided something eaten with ice cream was in style! Now, as you learn English, youre on your way to learning French!29French was once popular among the upper classes of the UK because _ .Atoo many Frenchmen moved to Britain.Bthe French brought animals with themCthe king and his officials spoke FrenchDthe king allowed French to be spoken30The underlined word “retained” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English maybe good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs. Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may bee interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic(认错的) about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.33. What is the passage mainly about?A.
