This passage is mainly developed by _.A. listing advantages B. providing statisticsC. answering questions D. making comparisons23. Where is this passage most likely taken from?A. A research report. B. A website. C. A personal blog. D. A journal.BI first came across the concept of pay-what-you-can cafes last summer in Boone, N.C., where I ate at F.A.R.M (Feed All Regardless of Means) Caf. You can volunteer to earn your meal, pay the suggested price($10) or less, or you can overpaypaying it forward for a future customers meal. My only regret after eating there was not having a chance to give my time. So as soon as Healthy World Caf opened in York in April, I signed up for a volunteer shift(轮班).F.A.R.M and Healthy World are part of a growing trend of community cafs. In 2003, Denise Cerreta opened the first in Salt Lake City. Cerreta now runs the One World Everybody Eats Foundation, helping others copy her pay-what-you-can model.“I think the community caf is truly a hand up, not a handout,” Cerreta said. She acknowledged that soup kitchens(施粥所) have a place in society, but people typically dont feel good about going there.“One of the values of the community caf is that we have another approach,” she said. “Everyone eats here, no one needs to know whether you volunteered, overpaid or underpaid.”The successful cafs not only address hunger and food insecurity but also become necessary parts of their neighborhood whether its a place to learn skills or hear live music. Some teach cooking to seniors; some offer free used books. Eating or working there is a reminder that we are all in this world together. My 10 am-1pm shift at World-Healthy-Caf began with the caf manager one of the two paid staff members. Our volunteer crew wasnt the most orderly, but we managed to prepare and serve meals with a lot of laughs in between. At the end of my shift, I ordered my earned meal at the counter, together with other volunteers. After lunch, I walked out of the door, with a handful of new friends, music in my head and a satisfied belly and heart.24. What did the author do at F.A.R.M Caf last summer? A. She enjoyed a meal. B. By 2025, as many as 250,000 self-driving vehicles could be sold each year globally, according to a study by an industry research firm.Vehicles that can take anyone from A to B at the push of a button could transform mobility for millions of people, said Chris Urmson, director of Googles self-driving car project. For now, Google has no plans to sell any of its self-driving cars. They are strictly for research. But they will hit public roads this summer near Googles headquarters in Mountain View, California. Previous testing has taken place only on closed courses. The cars are built to operate without a steering wheel, accelerator(油门)or brake pedal. Our software and sensors do all the work, Urmson said. The vehicles will be very basicwe want to learn from them and adapt them as quickly as possiblebut they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button. The prototype(雏形)are the first of a 100-car fleet the tech giant is building. In the long run, Urmson sees a future of safer roadsthe majority of auto accidents are caused by human errorand fewer traffic jams. Robotic cars could also shuttle people who cant drive because of age or illness. Google has said that self-driving cars could launch new business models in which people buy the use of vehicles they dont own. The company has already tested other types of self-driving cars on public streets, including modified Lexus sport-utility vehicles, under a special permit program by the California Department of Motor Vehicles that requires a human driver at the controls. The state has issued six other companies permits to operate such cars, including Delphi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Tesla, Bosch and Nissan. The vehicles that will be tested on open roads this summer will have removable steering wheels, accelerators and brake pedals to allow safety drivers to take control if needed. Google says the cars are safe. The vehicles have sensors that can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections, Urmson said. Were looking forward to learning how the community understands and interacts with the vehicles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle, Urmson said.28. The passage informs us that self-driving cars _.A. will probably decrease traffic jamsB. have already passed necessary testsC. have been purchased by some companiesD. will be able to communicate with drivers29. According to Chris Urmson, _.A. software and sensors are vital for self-driving carsB. self-driving cars can give driving orders to humansC. self-driving cars are specially designed for the elderlyD. ordinary vehicles will be replaced by self-driving cars30. The underlined word intersections in the last paragraph probably means _.A. accidents B. buildings C. crossings D. vehicles31. What is the best title for this passage?A. Self-driving Car Avoids Human ErrorsB. Self-driving Car Meets New ChallengesC. Googles Self-driving Car Enjoys Global PopularityD. Googles Self-driving Car is on the way to City StreetsD Its rare that you see the words shyness and leader in the same sentence. After all, the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shytheyre just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few innies.Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. Theyre not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地) motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence:they own the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers arent modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, theyre more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that arent primarily apparent. Dont believe me? Maybe youll believe Albert Einstein, who once said, Its not that Im so smart, its that I stay with problems longer. Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person. The myth that shy people are less effective leaders than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.32. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that _.A. shy people are sensitive to rewardsB. shy people care more about contentC. outgoing people are more careful about chancesD. outgoing people consider what to learn while listening33. The example of Johnny shows _.A. shy people are likely to be modestB. hardworking students speak little in publicC. some students keep silent on purpose at schoolD. shy people may have an advantage in discussion34. We can learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that _.A. success results from devotionB. shyness contributes to popularityC. outside reward leads to insistenceD. uncertainty counts more than certainty35. The author supports his ideas mainly by _.A. giving definitions and presenting research resultsB. explaining problems and providing solutionsC. quoting authorities and making evaluationsD. making contrasts and giving examples第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Tips to Increase Your ProductivityWant to get more done in your day?
