Locals cross-examined, and begged Lin, the owner of the store , but in vain. Running a small, local, family-owned hardware business was no longer profit-making. The towns affection for Parks Hardware was just not enough to allow it to compete against the giant warehouse stores. I was one member of the excited masses that began to walk through Parks as , day by day, the lettering on the front window changed from “20% OFF EVERYTHING” to “30%”, “40%”, and on and on , until the only things left were the light sockets (插座) and doorknobs. Compared with giant warehouses, a hardware store is special. I recall the time I was exploring in one giant warehouse for a wireless doorbell that Parks didnt carry. I found the thing, but I didnt understand the following note on the package: “Red light indicates condition of the battery.” “Excuse me,” I said to a clerk, holding the item out, “I cant seem to find the red light.” The man examined it, and said, “Neither can I.” I contrasted this experience with one I routinely had at Parks. “Lin,” Id beg. “Can you .please.I dont know.do you think.?” And quicker than one could say, “little red light,” Lin would spring into action and together wed sit down to find the solution. I could buy a single screw(螺丝钉)at Parks . At a warehouse I have no choice but to buy a box of a hundred screws. But I dont want a box of a hundred screws when all I need is one. I just want to know the location of the little red light, and now that Parks is gone, I realize that I never will.24. Why did Parks decide to stop its business?A. The owner invested in other business. B. The owner couldnt make enough money.C. Its location was not convenient for shopping. D. It couldnt win enough affection from the locals.25. What did Parks do before closing? A. It had a closing down sale. B. It struggled for its reorganization. C. It distributed its goods to regulars. D. It looked for a new owner.26. What does the writers experience in Paragraph 3 indicate? A. The benefit of having more choices. B. The pressure of competition for Parks. C. The good service of Parks. D. The responsible working attitude of large stores.27. Whats the writers tone in writing this passage? A. Humorous. B. Supportive C. Critical D. RegretfulCTo develop ones taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience. My first English novel was Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. Its not the vocabulary that troubled me,but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingways novel A Farewell to Arms. Not long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward style. So my first suggestion is,as a beginner, youd better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones. However,if you restrict yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russells work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the peculiar sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestionessays are indispensable. Never follow others recommendations and opinons blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one mans meat is another mans poison. With that in mind,we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.28. What made the authors first English novel hard to understand?A. Complex conversations. B. Sentences and Austens thinking pattern. C. The old-fashioned vocabulary. D. Not knowing the social background.29. Which can best replace the underlined word “indispensable”?A. necessary B. challenging C. relevant D. inspirational30. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?A. Compare books before buying.B. Read books that are instructive.C. Dont be affected by others choices.D. Choose books that challenge us most.31. What is the authors purpose of writing the passage?A. Give comments on literature works. B. Tell beginners how to choose English books. C. Encourage people to read more English books. D. Recommend first-class books to English learners.DPeople love cellphones, which is why nine in ten Americans own one. But does heavy use of cellphones pose a risk of cancer? This question has caused controversy for many years. A new study in rats now augments those concerns. Its data linked long-term, intense exposure to radiation from cellphones with an increased risk of cancer in the heart or brain. The results have yet to be confirmed, the authors note.Indeed, although the rat study found a link between cellphone radiation and cancer, it offers no clues to why such a link might exist, notes Jonathan Samet. He teaches preventative medicine and directs the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Still, he calls the new studys findings “ significant”. They could lead to studies researching how cellphone radiation might cause cancer, he says.Phone signals are relayed between cell towers and cellphones via radio waves. This radio frequency-or RF- radiation is a type known as non-ionizing(非电离的). Unlike X-rays, non- ionizing radiation does not deposit enough energy into cells to release electrons from atoms or molecules, producing ions. So it tends to be far less harmful than ionizing radiation, such as X-rays. But that does not mean radio waves might not cause harm.In very large doses(量) this radiation will heat the body and cause tissue damage. But its not yet known what much lower RF levels might do, such as those from cellphone use. Five years ago, the World Health Organizations International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, concluded that cellphone use “is possibly carcinogenic(致癌的)”.Its conclusion was based on what little research data was available at that time. But notice that IARC was not certain. It said only that phone use might ”possibly” cause cancer. So scientists at the National Toxicology Program, or NTP, investigated further.32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “augments”?A. figures out B. puts out C. refers to D. adds to33. In which aspect does Jonathan Samet think the new study in rats is significant?A. It assists him with his teaching. B. It indicates a new research direction. C. It warns people to mind cellphone safety. D. It makes a breakthrough in cancer research.34. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How phone signals are delivered.B. How cellphones produce radiation.C. Features of radiation from cell phones.D. Differences between ionizing and non- ionizing radiation.35. What might be the theme of NTP scientists further research?A. Why cell phone use causes cancer. B. Whether cell phone use really causes cancer.C. What health effects cellphone use has.D. How much exposure to cellphone radiation is safe.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)注意:涂卡时,E=AB; F=AC; G=ADHow to Welcome Change in Your LifeDo you embrace(欣然接受) the road you are now on or resist and avoid change at all costs when a recent event has shaken you greatly?
