Unit 9 Going on Vacation Step One Warming-up questions(15minutes) (The teacher first brings Ssattention to the useful expressions which could be helpful in their answering the following questions.) We are all longing for vacation. What would you like to do on vacation? Do you like traveling? Why? What places have you been to? Which one impresses you most? Travelers are always discoverers. How true do you think this statement is? Can you imagine a life limited to one place only? What significant role can traveling play in a persons life? Useful expressions: Traveling helps us to broaden our minds / increase our knowledge / identify ourselves with nature. Traveling enables us to see new places / meet new people / learn about new cultures. I travel for travels sake. The important thing is to go, not to go anywhere in particular. Useful expressions(continued) Thanks to modern means of transportation, it is possible to travel across the country / to remote areas / abroad. Among the places I have been to, impresses me most / is most unforgettable / leaves the deepest impression on my mind. I like visiting small villages / hiking in the mountains / going to seaside resorts. Useful expressions(continued) I am against traveling. Its a waste of time and money, and its too much hassle. I find traveling stressful and useless because it disrupts the work I should be doing. Traveling is a way to hide from ones responsibility. Step 2 Pair work: making reservations (20minutes) (The teacher first helps Ss to learn some expressions and vocabulary which they are encouraged to use in their dialogue. Choose several pairs to present their conversations in class.) (See the following A a table for three in Cherry Hotel; a flight ticket from London to Beijing. A.Useful expressions for making a reservation: Id like to make a reservation of a single room for two nights. Can I reserve a suite of two rooms for this weekend? Wed like to stay in a first class hotel. Is there a twin room with shower available at this weekend? Can you recommend a nice bed-and breakfast? Id like to book a table for tonight. Id like to make a reservation. Do you have any flights for New York on December 2nd? Can I book two tickets for Sunday night, October 21st? Step 3 Group discussion: Lets travel around the world (45minutes) 1) Before-class preparation (This activity requests studentspreparation before class, so the task was assigned to students at the end of last class. At the same time some tips must be provided, for example, how to find the relevant information on the Internet. In class the students will be given extra 25 minutes to perfect their plan.) Plan a journey Budget: 20,000 Yuan per person (The sum of sum should cover the visa fee, return flight tickets, accommodation, souvenirs, in-city traveling expense and tickets to the charged tourist attractions) Destination: Each group chooses one of the following cities: Paris, London, Rome, Athens, Munich, New York, Sidney or Vienna. (Five groups each class) Time: a 5-day/4-night vacation Task: Every group must make an itinerary and a budget. 2) Presentation The students are divided into 5 groups and each group is given 4 or 5 minutes to make a presentation and the teacher will give comment on the feasibility of their plans according to the following questions: Step 4 Summary (8 minutes) For Ssperformance in class activities: Praise for those with excellent performance and encouragement for poor ones For language: Sentences and structures (see the top) Useful words and expressions (see the top) Skill learned in this period (how to make a reservation) Step 5 Homework (2 minutes) Review the language points learned in this unit.
