Thethoraciccavityisdividedintoacentralarea,themediastinum,whichcontainstheheartinitspericardialsacandotherstructures,andlateralareascontainingthelungsintheirpleuralsacs.

Ⅰ.Conceptofmediastinum

Ⅰ)Alloforgansbetweentheleftandrightmediastinalpleuraeiscalledmediastinum.

Ⅱ)Itextendsfromthesternuminfronttothevertebralcolumnbehind,andfromthethoracicinletabovetothediaphragmbelow.

Ⅱ.Subdivisionsofmediastinum

Forpurposesofdescription,themediastinumisdividedintosuperiorandinferiormediastinabyanimaginaryplanepassingfromthesternalangleanteriorlytothelowerborderofT4posteriorly.Theinferiormediastinumisfurthersubdividedintothemiddlemediastinum,whichconsistsofthepericardium,andheart;theanteriormediastinum,whichisaspacebetweenthepericardiumandthesternum;andtheposteriormediastinum,whichliesbetweenthepericardiumandthevertebralcolumn.
