郑和的第一次航行始于1405年，但其实巨大的船只1403年就在南京的船坞开始建造。船上装备了指南针、地图、淡水以及食物。船队由200多艘船只组成，其中有62艘宝船、27800名水手，为当时世界之最。船队装载了大量货物，例如丝绸、茶叶和瓷器。1405年7月，郑和率领船队从江苏太仓出发，一路向西航行。他们到了东南亚的很多地方，不仅与当地人进行商业交易，还向他们传授造船和农耕的技术。这次航行为期两年。1407年，郑和的船队回到中国，带回了诸如香料的很多异域商品，以及众多精彩的故事。

二十八年中，郑和和他的船队七下西洋，访问了亚洲和非洲的三十多个国家和地区，大力促进了文化与技术的交流，也标志着海上丝绸之路发展史上的最重要时刻。
