inthehot,drysummer,theplantainsdiedoff.Thecaterpillarsrespondedby
enteringastatecalleddiapause.Then,whennormalwinterrainscameandthe
plantains’
flowerscameoutagain,thecaterpillarscamebacktolifeandstartedeating.Oncethey’dgrownlargeenough,thecaterpillarsformedpupae(蛹)and
emergedasadultbutterflies.Thisstrategyworkedwellinmostyears,butas
