oxygenintothedeeperwatersofonebasin.Theotherbasinwasleftalone,resultinginnaturallow-oxygenlevelsin

deepwaters.Theymeasuredmethaneemissionsfrombothbasinstobetterunderstandhowdissolvedoxygenaffects

emissions.

Inlinewiththeresearchers*expectations,onlyasmallamountofmethanegatheredinthebasinwithadded

oxygen,whereasmoremethanegatheredinthelow-oxygenwatersofthecontrolbasin.However,littleofthis

gatheredmethanewasreleasedtotheatmosphereinsummermonths,contrarytoexpectationsfrompriorresearch.

Furthercalculationssuggestedthatamaximumof24%andaslittleas0%ofthemethaneinthelakewasreleased

duringseasonalmixing.Therestwasconsumedbyaspecialgroupofmicrobesthatuseitforenergy,providingan

importantecosystemservicecalledmicrobialmethaneoxidation(氧化).

Thesefindingssuggestthatinsomecases,low-oxygenconditionsmayhaveasmallerimpactonmethane

emissionsfromlakesthanpreviouslythoughtandthatfromyeartoyear,emissionsmayvarywidelybecauseof

differentdegreesofseasonalmixing.Furtherresearchisneededtobetterunderstandthisvariabilityandits

implicationsforclimatechange.
