TextAisthefirstpartofInDreamsBeginResponsibilities,ashortstorybyDelmoreSchwartz.Thestorywasfirstpublishedin1937inthefirstissueofthePartisanReview.Thisstoryandothershortstoriesandpoemsbecamehisfirstbook,alsoentitledInDreamsBeginResponsibilities,publishedin1938whenSchwartzwasonly25yearsold.Thebookwaswellreceived,andmadehimawell-knownfigureinNewYorkintellectualcircles.Hisworkreceivedpraisefromsomeofthemostrespectedpeopleinliterature,includingT.S.Eliot,WilliamCarlosWilliams,andEzraPound,andSchwartzwasconsideredoneofthemostgiftedandpromisingyoungwritersofhisgeneration.OfallofSchwartz’sstories,itisprobablyhisbest-knownandmostinfluential.2.AboutthestoryPartOne:
