Itisoneofmyfaults,thatthoughmytongueissometimespromptenoughatananswer,therearetimeswhenitsadlyfailsmeinframinganexcuse;andalwaysthelapseoccursatsomecrisis,whenafacilewordorplausiblepretextisspeciallywantedtogetmeoutofpainfulembarrassment.IdidnotliketowalkatthishouralonewithMr.Rochesterintheshadowyorchard;butIcouldnotfindareasontoallegeforleavinghim.Ifollowedwithlaggingstep,andthoughtsbusilybentondiscoveringameansofextrication;buthehimselflookedsocomposedandsogravealso,Ibecameashamedoffeelinganyconfusion:theevil—ifevilexistentorprospectivetherewas—seemedtoliewithmeonly;hismindwasunconsciousandquiet.
