Anewattempttopredictearthquakeswiththeaidofartificialintelligence(AI)hasraisedhopesthatthetechnologycouldonedaybeusedtolimitearthquakes’impactonlivesandeconomies.DevelopedbyresearchersatTheUniversityofTexasatAustin,theAIalgorithmcorrectlypredicted70%ofearthquakesaweekbeforetheyhappenedduringaseven-monthtrialinChina.

TheAIwastrainedtofindunusualpatternsinreal-timeseismicdatathatresearchershadpairedwiththedataofpreviousearthquakes.TheoutcomewasaweeklyforecastinwhichtheAIsuccessfullypredicted14earthquakeswithinabout200milesofwhereitestimatedtheywouldhappenandatalmostexactlythecalculatedstrength.Itmissedoneearthquakeandgaveeightfalsewarnings.

It’snotyetknownifthesameapproachwillworkatotherlocations,buttheeffortisasignificantachievementinresearchforAI-drivenearthquakeforecasting.

“Predictingearthquakesistheultimategoal,”saidaprofessor,whoisamemberoftheresearchteam.“We’renotyetclosetomakingpredictionsforanywhereintheworld,butwhatweachievedtellsusthatwhatwethoughtwasanimpossibleproblemissolvableinprinciple.”

Theresearcherssaidthattheirmethodhadsucceededbyfollowingarelativelysimplemachinelearningapproach.TheAIwasgivenasetofstatisticalfeaturesbasedontheteam’sknowledgeofearthquakephysics,thentoldtotrainitselfonafive-yeardatabaseofseismicrecordings.Oncetrained,theAIgaveitsforecastbylisteningforsignsofincomingearthquakesamongthebackgroundrumblingsintheEarth.

“Ourfuturegoalistocombinebothphysicsanddata-drivenmethodstocreateageneralizedsystemthatwecanapplyanywhereintheworld,”saidtheAI’sleaddeveloper.“Thenewresearchisanimportantsteptowardsachievingthatgoal.”

Aco-authorofthestudysaid,“Weknowthatinjustsevendays,a1-meterlengthofwell-managedthickbarrierwillcapturethesameamountofpollutionthatacaremits(排放)overa500-miledrive.”Theresearchersrecommendplantingfranchet’scotoneasteralongbusyroads.
