ISO3852:2007ENIronoresforblastfurnaceanddirectreductionfeedstocks—Bulkdensityisameasurementthatindicatestheamountofmaterialpackedintoagivenvolume.Itiscommonlyusedtoassessthedensityofironoresandothermaterialsusedintheproductionofironandsteel.

Todeterminethebulkdensityofironores,thefollowingstepsshouldbetaken:

1.Selectasampleofironorethatisrepresentativeofthematerialbeingtested.Thesampleshouldbefreefromcontaminationandhaveaconsistentcomposition.

2.Determinetheweightofthesample.Thiswillbedoneusingabalanceorsimilardevice.

3.Determinethevolumeofthecontainerthatholdsthesample.Thiscanbedoneusingacalibratedcylinderorsimilardevice.

4.Calculatethebulkdensitybydividingtheweightofthesamplebythevolumeofthecontainer.Theresultingnumberwillindicatehowtightlypackedthematerialis.

Thebulkdensityofironorescanvarydependingonfactorssuchastheircomposition,particlesize,moisturecontent,andtemperature.However,ahighbulkdensitygenerallyindicatesamoredenseandcompactmaterialthatissuitableforuseinblastfurnacesordirectreductionprocesses.
