understandthatpatternscanalsobesequencesofshapesornumbersthatgrowinsomepredictableway.OneDot,ManyDotsisasimplegrowingpatternthatadds1dotperdaytoagrowingcollection.However,ifyouexaminethefirstfewmarkersinthesequence,youcanobserveavarietyofotherpatternsaswell.

Youmightnotice,forinstance,thatthereisanequalnumberofredandbluedotsoneveryeven–numbered

marker.Everyfourthmarker,startingwithMarker1,displaysdotsinonlyonecolor,andthecolorsalternate.Marker1showsonereddot.Marker5showsfivebluedots.Marker9showsninereddots,Marker13shows

thirteenbluedots,andsoon.Thenthereisthefactthatthedotsareloopedingroupsof5tomakethemeasiertocount.Asthemonthunfolds,studentsmightnoticethateveryfifthmarker,startingwithMarker5,anotherloopappears.Whilesomeofyourstudentsmaybenefitprimarilyfromthedailyopportuntiestocountand

comparesets,restassuredthatotherswilldiscoversomeofthepatternsmentionedhere,aswellasothers,espe-ciallyifyouarealerttothemanypossibilities.
