jazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwinagreedtocomposesomethingfortheconcert

composedapieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhecalledRhapsodyinBlue.
Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewerethrilledwhen
theyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousandshowedthatjazzmusiccould
bebothseriousandpopular.
In1928,GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycomposition(作曲)withthe

writersofplaysinsmallchurchhallstothepeopleofEdinburgh.
Todaythe“Fringe”,oncelessrecognized,hasfaroutgrownthefestivalwith
around1,500performancesoftheatre,musicanddanceoneveryoneofthe21days
itlasts.Andyetasearlyas1959,withonly19theatregroupsperforming,somesaidit
wasgettingtoobig.
Apaidadministratorwasfirstemployedonlyin1971,andtodaythereareeight
administratorsworkingallyearroundandthenumberrisesto150duringAugust
