exampleofsuch"hedonicadaptatiou”(享乐适应)comesfroma1970sstudy
oflotterywinners,whoendedupnohappierthannonwinnersayear,after
theirwindfall(意夕卜横财).Hedonicadaptationhelpstoexplainwhyeven
changesinmajorlifecircumstances—suchasincome,marriage,physical
healthandwherewelive—dosolittletoboostouroverallhappiness.Notonly

eachperson'shappinessisdeterminedfrombirth.This"geneticsetpoint"

simplepiechartshowingwhatdetermineshappiness.Halfthepieisthe

sleepinguprighttousingnosestripsoramouthguard.Buttoherandher
husband'sdismay,nothingworked.Whenshesignedupforthestudyand
spentanightatasuburbanBostonsleeplab,shefoundoutwhy.
Afterreviewinghersleeppatternsandoxygenlevels,researcherstoldherthat
hersnoringwasactuallyanindicationofsomethingworse.Shesufferedfrom
